Just when you thought surviving at microscopic scale in Brookhollow Park was getting manageable, Obsidian Entertainment decided to dump a mountain of rotten timber right on your head. The team officially unveiled the Rot and Ruin update for Grounded 2, packing the autumn release with nasty creepy-crawlies, heavy armor upgrades, and defensive bug mounts. If you thought regular spiders were bad enough, get ready for a completely different tier of nightmare fuel crawling out of the mulch.

Entering the Woodpile and Meeting the Centipede

The centerpiece of the update is the Woodpile adventure area, a zone defined by towering timber structures, tight passages, and fungal rot. Termites make their triumphant return in force, fielding familiar Workers, Soldiers, and the bulky Termite King alongside brand-new O.G.R.R. variants. Obsidian notes that these critters will not behave like their old iterations, sporting new attack routines and erratic behaviors that will easily punish careless wanderers.

As if an organized colony of wood-chewing soldiers were not enough trouble, the park also welcomes the much-requested Centipede boss. This multi-legged abomination slithers straight into the apex predator slot with aggressive reach and overwhelming speed. Survival veterans will need every bit of crowd control and spatial awareness they can muster, because running away down narrow tunnels is rarely an easy escape route.

Taming the Potato Beetle Buggy

To help counter the swarm, players can saddle up on the new Potato Beetle Buggy. This beast dwarfs the existing Ladybug Buggy and specializes in close-quarters brawl situations. Outfitted with an upfront projectile burst and a specialized Healing Roar ability, this mount is tailored to keep you upright when surrounded by aggressive swarms.

Beyond serving as an armored tank in combat, the Potato Beetle also pulls double duty as a construction workhorse. It hauls heavy cargo across Brookhollow Park and can deposit resources directly into open base blueprints. Anyone who has spent hours carrying grass planks across uneven terrain knows exactly how big of a time-saver that will be.

Base Painting and Bismuth Upgrades

Base builders get an overdue aesthetic upgrade through the introduction of structure painting. Using crafted paints and a new paintball gun dubbed the Splotcher, you can spray custom colors onto walls, roofs, floors, stairs, and doorways. If you want to turn a dingy fort into a neon beacon visible across the entire lawn, you finally have the tools.

Combat progression also receives a crucial boost with a new mineral called Bismuth. Tied directly to the underground Raw Science currents, Bismuth can be harvested and refined at the new Yoking Press station to upgrade weapons and armor to higher tiers. Throw in fresh SCA.B color themes, collectible miniatures, and additional crafting stations, and your character will have plenty of projects before facing the deep tunnels.

The Rot and Ruin update lands as part of the ongoing preview period for Grounded 2 on Xbox Wire. The title is currently playable across Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Game Pass, Steam Early Access, and PlayStation 5, with the complete version 1.0 release targeted for 2027.
