Buying Grand Theft Auto V on Xbox 360 is one of those occasions where “the game disc is in the case” is not a complete answer. The original retail release uses two discs with different jobs, and the console needs room for a mandatory installation.
Miss either detail and your first trip to Los Santos can become a tour of storage menus. Exciting city. Questionable opening activity.
Disc 1 installs; Disc 2 plays
Rockstar assigns Disc 1 to the required installation and Disc 2 to play. Normal play does not involve repeated disc swaps.
The practical buying rule is straightforward: get both discs. A play disc by itself does not contain everything needed for the initial setup described by Rockstar. An install disc by itself is not the play disc.
This also matters when checking a loose copy or replacing a missing disc. Look at the actual disc label and ask which part of the set it is. A photo of the case front does not settle that question, and a single generic “game included” line is not as useful as a clear list of contents.

The 4 GB console does not have enough internal room
The requirement is 8 GB free on an Xbox 360 hard drive or a suitable external 16 GB USB flash drive.
Rockstar specifies USB 2.0 or better, at least 15 MB/s read speed and Xbox 360 formatting, and recommends a new drive. Check those requirements individually; a capacity label alone is not a complete specification.
A 4 GB Xbox 360 therefore needs suitable additional storage. The model name does not create an exception to the installation requirement. Check usable free space on the device you intend to use, rather than assuming its advertised capacity is all available.
Before configuring or formatting storage, protect any files already on it and read the console's prompts. Buying a game should not accidentally turn into deleting somebody's existing saves.
Do not automatically install the play disc as well
Rockstar recommends installing only the Install Disc, rather than adding a dashboard installation of the Play Disc. This is the detail that can trip up an otherwise sensible routine.
Follow the title-specific instructions. “I always install everything” is a useful routine only until the publisher gives you a reason to do something else.

The PS3 copy is packaged differently
The PS3 release has one disc and an approximately 8 GB installation. Its packaging should not be used as a reference for a 360 set.
Do not use a photo of a PS3 set to judge whether a 360 copy is complete. They can depict the same game and still have different media requirements. The same caution applies to buying a newer-console edition: instructions for one platform should not be carried over solely because the title matches.
For collectors, the useful question is not “does GTA V have one disc or two?” It is “which release am I holding, and what does that release require?” Platform is part of the answer.
Buy the 360 version for its surviving single-player game
GTA Online on Xbox 360 and PS3 closed on December 16, 2021. Rockstar's closure FAQ distinguishes those retired online services from Story Mode.
Installing the discs does not bring those services back. A working physical copy is a way to play the supported surviving experience on that hardware, not a ticket into the current GTA Online ecosystem.
This is also why a description of an older game's original features needs a little interpretation. Packaging records what the release offered at the time. Your buying decision should account for what is still available.
A quick check before you order
- Version: the listing actually says Xbox 360.
- Discs: both Disc 1 and Disc 2 are included, with their roles identifiable.
- Storage: a suitable device has the required free space.
- Setup: follow Rockstar's install-disc instructions instead of automatically installing both.
- Expectation: choose the legacy version for Story Mode, with its online closure understood.
- Condition: read the selected option and included items, including any case or manual.
