The PS2 has so many games that excellent releases can disappear behind Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid and the other giants of the library. These are 20 PS2 games worth rediscovering if you want to move beyond the obvious classics.
This is an editorial list, not a rarity ranking. Some of these games are inexpensive, some have become collectible, and some are simply interesting because they tried ideas that few other games attempted.
1. Dark Cloud 2
Dark Cloud 2 mixes action RPG combat, dungeon exploration, crafting, photography and town-building. It is much deeper than its colorful appearance suggests and remains one of Level-5's most ambitious PS2 games.
2. Rogue Galaxy
Rogue Galaxy blends real-time RPG combat with a space-adventure setting and a large progression system. Sony still highlights it among notable PS2 classics, but it is easy to miss next to Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.
3. Radiata Stories
Radiata Stories has a huge cast of recruitable characters and a world built around NPC schedules. Its structure gives it a personality that feels different from most other PS2 RPGs.
4. Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Shadow Hearts: Covenant combines a dark alternate-history setting with turn-based combat built around timed Judgment Ring inputs. It has become a cult favorite among RPG collectors.
5. Steambot Chronicles
Steambot Chronicles mixes mech combat, exploration, music, jobs and life-simulation ideas in one strange package. It is exactly the kind of experimental game that made the PS2 library so broad.
6. Urban Reign
Urban Reign is a brutal 3D brawler from Namco with deep hand-to-hand combat. It never became a giant franchise, but fighting-game and beat-'em-up fans have kept its reputation alive.
7. The Red Star
The Red Star mixes shooting and melee combat with an arcade structure. It is straightforward, fast and easy to overlook because it arrived late in the PS2 generation.
8. Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Psi-Ops gives the player telekinesis and other psychic abilities that can be combined with weapons and physics. Throwing enemies and objects around environments still makes it feel unusually interactive.
9. Freedom Fighters
Freedom Fighters combines third-person shooting with simple squad commands and a resistance-war structure. It comes from IO Interactive, the studio behind Hitman.
10. The Mark of Kri
The Mark of Kri pairs a hand-drawn visual style with a melee targeting system built around engaging several enemies at once. It remains one of the more distinctive action games from Sony's PS2 era.
11. Primal
Primal is a dark fantasy action-adventure from Sony Cambridge. Its shifting worlds, transformations and cinematic presentation make it an interesting piece of early PS2 first-party history.
12. Maximo vs. Army of Zin
Maximo vs. Army of Zin continues Capcom's Ghosts 'n Goblins-inspired 3D action series with tighter combat and a playful gothic style.
13. Spartan: Total Warrior
Spartan: Total Warrior takes the scale of the Total War name and turns it into a third-person action game built around fighting huge groups of enemies.
14. Downhill Domination
Downhill Domination turns mountain biking into an arcade racer with shortcuts, combat and ridiculous speed. It is a strong pick for players who like SSX-style sports games.
15. Cold Winter
Cold Winter is a first-person shooter with strong environmental interaction and production values that were easy to overlook in a generation packed with shooters.
16. Gungrave: Overdose
Gungrave: Overdose is loud, stylish and built around constant shooting rather than realism. Anime fans and arcade-action players may find more here than its original reception suggested.
17. Gladius
Gladius is a tactical RPG centered on gladiator schools, turn-based arena combat and recruiting fighters. It is one of the more unusual genre experiments in the LucasArts catalog.
18. Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
Mercenaries gives players a large combat sandbox full of vehicles, airstrikes and destructible objectives. It deserves more attention when people talk about open-world PS2 games.
19. The Warriors
Rockstar's adaptation of The Warriors expands the film's world with brawling, gang missions and a surprisingly substantial story mode. It is often overshadowed by Rockstar's GTA games.
20. Scarface: The World Is Yours
Scarface takes the open-world crime formula in a different direction, imagining an alternate continuation of Tony Montana's story with empire-building systems and a distinctive tone.
How to find more PS2 hidden gems
Explore genres you normally skip, look at late-generation releases, and pay attention to publishers and developers rather than only famous franchises. The PS2's huge install base encouraged publishers to try almost everything.
