Xbox is shrinking its controller without removing the standard gameplay layout. The newly announced Xbox Nano Controller is a little over five inches long, weighs 3.5 ounces, and includes all 18 standard gameplay inputs.

It costs $49.99 in the US, is available to preorder now, and begins rolling out in November. Microsoft says pricing and availability vary by country, so the US price should not be treated as a universal conversion.

What actually changes with the smaller controller?

The confirmed difference is physical scale. Xbox describes Nano as its smallest controller and positions it for younger players, smaller hands, travel, and shared family play. That is a design goal, not proof that every player with small hands will prefer it. Hand comfort is personal, so size should be treated as something to compare rather than a guaranteed upgrade.

Xbox says the controller keeps all 18 standard gameplay inputs. It also includes a rechargeable battery and a programmable Action Button that can be assigned to screenshots, gameplay capture, and other frequently used shortcuts.

Wireless support is broader than one console

Nano supports Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth. Microsoft says that lets it connect across a range of compatible devices. The announcement does not turn that sentence into an exhaustive device-by-device compatibility chart, so buyers should still check the product page for the exact hardware they plan to use.

That is especially relevant if the controller is being purchased for cloud play on a television, a mobile setup, or travel. The controller may be compact enough for a bag, but the actual gaming setup still depends on the device and service being used.

Where it launches first

Microsoft lists November availability across dozens of markets, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, several European countries, and more. Additional markets are planned later.

For US buyers, Microsoft also announced two separate holiday bundles with partners. Select Samsung TV purchases will include an Xbox Nano Controller and two months of Game Pass Ultimate for new members. A Meta Quest holiday offer will include the same controller and two-month Game Pass Ultimate benefit for new members. Those are partner promotions, not benefits included with every standalone Nano controller.

Do not confuse Nano with a full-size replacement

The announcement is easiest to understand as a new size option. Microsoft has not said that Nano replaces the standard Xbox Wireless Controller. A smaller controller can make sense as a second pad for local multiplayer, a travel controller, or a better physical fit for a specific player without requiring the household to standardize on it.

If you are considering one specifically for couch co-op, compare it with the games you actually play and the number of controllers you already own. The $49.99 price is more useful in that context than treating “smaller” as a reason to replace a controller that already fits you.

Xbox's hardware announcement lands one day after its broader preservation experiment. For that separate story, see Xbox Labs Wants to Give Old Games New Paths to Players.
