Legacy of Kain: Defiance | Sony PlayStation 2 | PS2
Vampire and wraith join forces across the gulf of time to save Nosgoth and themselves from oblivion
Fans of the Blood Omen and Soul Reaver series will be in undead rapture when the anti-heroes of those two games ally in Legacy of Kain: Defiance. The vampire lord, Kain is still tussling with the time-twisting Mobius while Raziel - the reaper of souls and Kain's nemesis - is still struggling against his god-like captor in the ethereal realm 500 years in the future. Now the evil force of the Hylden threatens both of them and their parallel adventures are pulling them ever closer to a final confrontation with each other. Swords, sorcery, souls and buckets of blood await you in Legacy of Kain: Defiance.
The mix of visceral combat, challenging puzzles and gothic settings made Soul Reaver 1 and 2 and Blood Omen 2 huge hits on PS one and PlayStation 2. With LoK: Defiance, developer Crystal Dynamics has taken the choicest slices from these games and stitched them together into a throbbing, twitching monster of an action adventure. Kain's vampiric abilities return, gifting him with strength, an ability to 'mist' through bars, Darth Vader-like telekinesis and of course an insatiable thirst for blood. Raziel too has his fair share of powers; his tattered wings allow him to glide, he can absorb souls to fuel his powers and he can shift between the real- and the spirit-world to find the way forward.
As the adventure unfolds, Kain and Raziel find themselves in the same locations, albeit separated by half a millennium. The march of time and the presence of the Hylden can be seen when Raziel (trapped in Nosgoth's future) enters an area Kain has been, showcasing the game's brilliant level design and graphical flair. The mists and fog that shrouded the previous games have lifted, revealing Nosgoth's harsh and deadly beauty for all to see. Soon the cities, ruins and countryside will be running with the blood of Kain and Raziel's enemies as their defiance against the vile Hylden is felt across the centuries.
