Offsides? Defensive pass interference? Don't make us laugh! The only thing you have to worry about while playing Midway's latest pigskin Pak is getting the ball into the end zone. As long as you're putting points on the board, you can pull facemasks to your heart's desire and crack QBs with as many late hits as you can muster.
Duh ... Three Buttons?!
It's no secret that Blitz caters to the type of football fan who prefers 40-point barn burners to 6-point defensive showdowns. Like its predecessors, Blitz 2K1 uses a three-button controller configuration which makes the complex controls of NFL Quarterback Club 2001 seem like rocket science. Sim fans may turn up their noses at Blitz's straightforward gameplay, but fans of fast-paced arcade action can once again put their money on Midway's mix of big bombs and bad-mouthing bruisers.
You won't require any wristband cheat-sheets in Blitz 2001, because the entire playbook consists of 27 offensive plays and nine defensive plays. More ambitious players can use Blitz's beefy Playbook Editor to save team-specific offensive and defensive plays directly to a Controller Pak.
Rookie Additions
Seasoned vets of the Blitz series won't find any massive changes to the winning hit-and-run formula, but a few minor tweaks may be enough to make Blitz 2000 owners make the upgrade. New features include:
Individual player stats based on NFL performance
New player animations for tackles, leaps, celebrations and hits
Updated stadiums
Multiplayer capabilities in Season Mode
Pumped-up artificial intelligence
New soundtrack and even more obnoxious rants from the Blitz announcer
The most innovative of the 2K1 additions is a Party Games Mode, which allows one to four players to participate in competitive tests of gridiron glory. In 1st & Goal Frenzy, you have four downs to punch it in from your opponent's 10-yard line. Succeed and you move back to the 20, then the 30 and 40. Score from the 50 to win.
Goal Line Stand reverses the scenario: You are the defense trying to stop a rival team from scoring from the 50-yard line, then the 40, 30, 20 and 10. In Quarterback Challenge, you have to think quickly by passing the ball to designated receivers.
Perhaps most vital to Blitz's fan base, Midway has included all new Blitz cheerleaders to deliver insightful game tips between quarters.
That's Gotta Hurt.
Furious four-player action full of in-your-face thrills makes NFL Blitz 2001 one of the greatest party Paks available. Owners of the 2000 version may not have a lot of incentive to pick up this latest effort, but anyone who's been out of the loop since the '99 edition should definitely return to the huddle for another dose of solid arcade action.
