BloodRayne | Sony PlayStation 2 | PS2
She has an arsenal of knives and explosives, supernatural powers, and a thirst for blood. She's Agent BloodRayne, a half-vampire who puts the "fatale" in femme fatale, delivering mayhem across 40 stages of nonstop action on three continents.
Taking a third-person perspective, BloodRayne challenges you to track down a Nazi madman before he can find powerful artifacts in Louisiana, Argentina and Germany.
Combat
Agent BloodRayne can devastate armies with deft hand-to-hand abilities, two huge blades and outstanding acrobatic abilities. She's also handy with the many guns, explosives, rocket launchers and other weaponry that seem to be lying around. No poseur with a pistol, BloodRayne can target multiple enemies at once.
By defeating a certain number of enemies you will activate Blood Rage mode, which heightens your heroine's senses. The result is a slow-motion affect that allows you to move faster than your enemies and deliver damaging attacks for a short amount of time.
Agent BloodRayne's blood-draining abilities come in handy after an injury. Sucking the life from enemies will refill your life meter.
Graphics
The dark and sanguine style of BloodRayne owes a nod to movies like Blade II
and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. With a combination of tight leather and gratuitous gore, this game is definitely aimed for an older audience.
The acrobatic moves are well-animated, but a few hiccups in the framerate disrupt the action. Environments are appropriately gloomy, with few visual cues to point out important items. Fortunately, a mission compass helps direct you to the next objective.
BloodRayne is action-packed and stylish. A wide variety of weapons and attacks makes battling hordes of enemies interesting, but blurry textures undercut the otherwise eye-catching graphics.
