Sony changed hardware and backward-compatibility support across the PS3's life. Early systems included PS2 compatibility in certain models, while later revisions removed the ability to play PS2 discs.
Sony's own manuals for later PS3 models state that those systems do not play PlayStation 2 format software, even though they play PS3 software and may support original PlayStation software.
How do I know whether a PS3 plays PS2 discs?
Check the exact CECH model number printed on the PS3 and verify that model before purchasing. Cosmetic appearance alone is not a safe test because multiple revisions can look similar.
Which U.S. and Canadian PS3 models support PS2 discs?
Sony lists CECHA01, CECHB01 and CECHE01 for the U.S. and Canada. Match the complete model number on the console label, including the final digits. A listing that says only “original PS3” or “fat PS3” does not answer that question.
Imported consoles use different model numbers. Check the region-specific table in Sony’s PS3 playable-disc guide. Sony also cautions that some PS2 games may behave differently or fail to run even on a supported PS3.
What should I ask a seller before buying?
- Ask for a clear photo of the console’s model label.
- Ask whether the specific PS2 disc you want to play has been tested on that console.

Can every backward-compatible PS3 play every PS2 game perfectly?
