Yes, but only certain Nintendo Wii models can play GameCube games. The original Wii model with model number RVL-001 supports Nintendo GameCube game discs and GameCube accessories. Later Wii revisions and the Wii mini do not offer the same GameCube compatibility.
If you are shopping for a Wii specifically because you want one system that can cover both Wii and GameCube libraries, the model number matters.
Which Wii model plays GameCube games?
Nintendo identifies the original RVL-001 Wii as the GameCube-compatible model. One of the easiest visual clues is the set of GameCube controller ports hidden beneath the top or side flap, depending on how the console is positioned.
Nintendo's support documentation confirms that the original RVL-001 model is compatible with GameCube games and accessories. You can read Nintendo's official guidance here: Nintendo Wii disc compatibility support.
What about later Wii models?
Later Wii revisions removed GameCube support. Nintendo notes that Wii systems purchased in 2011 or later may not support GameCube software or accessories. If you are buying a used Wii for GameCube compatibility, do not rely only on the color of the console or a seller saying it is “an original Wii.” Check the actual model number.
Do I need a GameCube controller?
For GameCube games on a compatible Wii, you generally use a GameCube controller connected to the Wii's GameCube controller ports. Nintendo also notes that only Wii systems with compatible GameCube ports can use those accessories.
Do I need a GameCube memory card?
If you want to save progress in GameCube games, you will normally need a GameCube memory card inserted into the Wii's GameCube memory card slot. A Wii SD card does not replace a GameCube memory card for GameCube game saves.
Can the Wii mini play GameCube games?
No. The Wii mini does not support GameCube discs or GameCube accessories.
Can the Wii U play GameCube discs?
No. The Wii U can play Wii U and Wii game discs, but Nintendo specifically states that GameCube discs are not supported.
