The Wii U is backward compatible with Wii games, but it is not backward compatible with GameCube game discs. That difference matters if you are choosing between a Wii and Wii U for a retro Nintendo setup.
Can Wii U play Wii games?
Yes. Nintendo's official support documentation confirms that Wii U systems support Wii game discs. Wii software runs through Wii Mode, which recreates the Wii Menu environment on the Wii U.
See Nintendo's instructions for playing Wii games on Wii U.
Can Wii U play GameCube discs?
No. Nintendo states that Wii U supports Wii U and Wii game discs, but GameCube discs are not supported.
What about the GameCube Controller Adapter?
The existence of a GameCube Controller Adapter can make this confusing. The adapter was created for compatible Wii U software such as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It does not make the Wii U capable of reading original GameCube game discs.
Should I buy a Wii or Wii U for older games?
If your priority is physical Wii and Wii U games, the Wii U gives you access to both libraries. If your priority is physical Wii and GameCube games from one console, an original RVL-001 Wii is the more relevant option.
