Xbox Series X can play most Xbox One games and a large catalog of backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Physical-disc support depends on both the game being compatible and the console having a disc drive.
Can Series X play Xbox One discs?
Most Xbox One games are playable on Xbox Series X. Microsoft notes that a small number of existing games are excluded or may have feature limitations.
Can Series X play Xbox 360 discs?
Yes, when the Xbox 360 title is part of Microsoft's backward-compatible catalog. Insert the supported disc, allow the console to download the compatible version, and keep the disc in the drive when playing.
Can Series X play original Xbox discs?
Selected original Xbox titles are also supported. The original disc acts as proof of ownership while the console uses the backward-compatible version.
What about Xbox Series S?
Xbox Series S does not have a physical disc drive. Microsoft specifically notes that Series S uses backward compatibility with digital games only, so physical Xbox 360, original Xbox, or Xbox One discs cannot be inserted into that console.
Check Microsoft's official backward-compatibility catalog before buying an older game for a newer Xbox.
