It Takes Two on Switch 2: Free Upgrade Rules and the Co-op Setup That Changes

It Takes Two reaches Switch 2 with a regional upgrade offer for original-Switch owners. Here is how physical and digital claims differ, and why mixed-console co-op needs the right version.

It Takes Two arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 15, 2026 in most regions, but the useful question for existing owners is not simply whether to buy it again. EA says eligible owners of the original Switch edition can claim the Switch 2 version without another full-game purchase. The route differs for digital and physical copies, and a mixed-console co-op session has a separate wrinkle.

This is an ownership and setup guide to the new release, not a performance review. EA’s September 9 announcement places the Switch 2 launch on October 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea because of regional time zones. Its upgrade terms exclude Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan, with a small charge specified for Japan due to local legal restrictions. Check the offer shown in your own Nintendo Account region before treating “free upgrade” as universal.

How the Switch upgrade works

EA’s current Switch 2 support guide says digital owners can start the upgrade in Nintendo eShop. Physical owners should use the icon inside the game to reach the eShop offer. The company says the original Switch copy must be owned on the same Nintendo Account used to redeem it. An Xbox, PlayStation or PC purchase does not create a Switch upgrade entitlement.

For a secondhand physical buyer, the distinction is especially practical: a used cartridge and a digital ownership entitlement are not interchangeable. Confirm the exact account and in-game redemption route before assuming a loose copy will unlock a new platform version. EA lists both physical and digital Switch 2 editions, but this release should not be mistaken for a promise about the contents or condition of any particular resale listing.

Pick the co-op route before inviting a friend

It Takes Two is built around Cody and May working together, so platform pairing matters as much as the new image quality. EA’s support guide lists Switch 2 online play with other Switch 2 players and with PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S players. For local play with an original Switch, it points to Nintendo GameShare. For online play between an original Switch and Switch 2, EA says the Switch 2 player must download the original Switch edition through the free downgrade option.

That last step is easy to miss. GameShare is the local mixed-console route; it is not the same thing as simply sending an online invitation across the two Nintendo versions. EA says both players need the appropriate online subscription for an online session. Its free Friend’s Pass lets a second player join the full adventure when one player owns the full game, subject to the supported account, platform and online requirements in EA’s announcement.

What the newer edition changes

EA specifies native 1080p resolution, improved lighting and effects, and 60 frames per second in docked mode, compared with 30 frames per second on the original Switch. Those are the company’s stated specifications, not results of testing on our own hardware. The story and cooperative premise are familiar; the upgrade case is about presentation and the expanded ways to connect players.

If you already own the Switch version, start with your regional upgrade eligibility, then decide where your partner will play. A pair of Switch 2 systems, an original Switch nearby, and an original Switch connecting online are three different setups. Our local-multiplayer feature explains why those distinctions matter beyond this one release. For the broader October calendar, see New Games This Week.
