Your place is remembered on this device.

Dropping into Hajin without knowing how your operator survives is a fast track to donating your hard-earned guns to a rival squad. Following campaign early access, the early access window for DMZ went live on October 20, leading right into the October 23, 2026 global launch for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Battle.net, and additional platforms. Before you sprint blindly toward the nearest extraction chopper, you need to understand how Active Duty slots, MIA recovery fees, and trait investments actually work.

Active Duty Slots and the Price of Catching a Bullet

Your journey starts at the Forward Operating Base with two Active Duty Operator slots, though leveling your DMZ Player Level unlocks a third. An operator assigned to a slot stays locked there until you manually dismiss them for a fresh recruit. Every deployment risks that operative's life and their personal Dog Tag, which hostile combatants can rip off your corpse if you hit the floor.

Failing to extract brands your operative as MIA (Missing in Action). You cannot deploy them again until you visit the FOB Active Duty station to buy them back with banked DMZ Cash, or cut your losses and dismiss them entirely. The painful twist is that recovery costs scale aggressively with the number of Trait Points invested in that character. A rescued soldier keeps their unlocked traits but loses every piece of equipped gear, forcing you to rearm or rely on the complimentary Free Loadout available every run.

Trait Trees: Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist

Extracting successfully awards one Trait Point, which you spend across the Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist trees. Across the entire mode, there are 66 total traits available, but any individual operative can collect a maximum of 18. Choose carefully, because once you lock in an upgrade on a branch, alternative options on that same path are closed off permanently.

Warfighter traits center on direct combat advantages, featuring perks like Adrenaline Burst to reset Tactical Sprint after kills, Combat Resistance to reduce explosive and tactical damage, and Possum for a once-per-match self-revive. The Scout tree focuses on gathering supplies, offering perks like Thermal Padding to avoid UAV detection, Overwatch to keep UAV towers active, and bonuses that cause hostiles or containers to cough up rarer loot. Meanwhile, Survivalist provides self-reliance with perks like Metabolism for passive health recovery, Impact Smokes when downed, and Die Hard, which calls an exfil near extraction zones while granting infinite bleed-out time in Last Stand.

Prestige: The Ultimate Reset Loop

Once an operator secures 18 Trait Points, they hit the ceiling of standard build progression. If you have stockpiled sufficient DMZ Cash and managed to equip a specific set of rare gear, you can choose to Prestige that character. This is completely distinct from standard Level 1-55 account leveling and belongs entirely to the individual operator.

Triggering Prestige wipes your backpack contents clean and resets all 18 spent Trait Points back to zero. In return, that soldier earns one permanent Prestige Trait rolled at random from the pool, which sticks with them forever even if they get re-skinned or swapped between slots. You can then climb the trait ladder all over again toward higher Prestige tiers, though each subsequent cycle demands steeper cash reserves and rarer gear.
