Critical Role's Rockbeasts Partnership Goes Beyond the Voice Cast

Critical Role joins Rockbeasts creatively and as a publishing partner. Here is what the band-management RPG promises ahead of its January 2027 PS5 and PC window.

Critical Role is joining Rockbeasts as a creative and publishing partner, with Matthew Mercer and Sam Riegel also joining the voice cast. Lichthund announced the partnership on October 8, 2026, alongside a January 2027 release window for PlayStation 5. The current Steam listing gives the same month for PC.

The distinction is worth making: this is not simply a casting announcement. In his developer statement, Lichthund creative director and co-CEO Bartosz Pieczonka identifies both creative collaboration and publishing involvement. Neither that statement nor the month-long window gives players an exact launch day.

You manage the people who make the music

Rockbeasts puts you in charge of a grunge band in an alternative 1990s America. The developer's game page describes a mixture of relationship decisions, limited resources and rhythm-based performances. Feeding the musicians, maintaining equipment and organizing rehearsal space sit alongside building setlists and taking the stage.

Our reading is that the interesting promise lies in connecting those jobs. A performance is one part of the band's life, rather than the entire reason to have a band on screen. How convincingly the finished game links personal decisions, preparation and concerts is something players will need to judge at release.

A release window, not a finished-game verdict

The current PC listing names Lichthund and Critical Role as publishers and marks the full game as not yet available. It also offers a separate demo. A demo is an opportunity to sample the game, not evidence that the January release has already happened.

For anyone following the voice cast into an unfamiliar genre, start with what the player actually does. Do the dialogue choices interest you? Does the management side appeal as much as the performances? Those questions are more useful than treating familiar performers as a guarantee that the whole game will suit you.
