October 15 update: withdrawal announced, owner access retained

SEGA and Creative Assembly say they are working with storefront operators to withdraw SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition from sale and make the original game purchasable again. Their October 15 announcement acknowledges problems with the release and says owners will retain access to play it.

The statement describes a process in progress. It does not establish that every storefront has finished the change, and it gives no date for the Complete Edition to return. We could not independently confirm the current Steam purchase options because its listing presented an age-verification page.

That changes the buying advice below: check the current storefront offer before making a purchase. Existing owners should keep their chosen installation and mod setup intact while the developers investigate. The launch details below remain as dated background, rather than confirmation of what is currently for sale.

Original October 13 launch and ownership details

SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition launched on PC on October 13, 2026. Our original coverage focused on the separation between the new edition and the 2011 game, including their different mod support.

Creative Assembly's official FAQ lists an October 13 launch at 16:00 BST, which was 9:00 a.m. Mountain time. The announced Windows PC launch covered Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG; those launch plans do not confirm present purchase availability after the October 15 withdrawal announcement.

What is actually in the Complete Edition?

The package combines the base SHOGUN 2 campaign with Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai. Those three campaigns cover very different periods and military problems, from the Genpei War through the Sengoku era and into the industrial conflict of the Boshin War.

SEGA and Creative Assembly also list modern technical changes: updated lighting, shadows and textures, 1440p and 4K interface scaling, ultrawide support, modernized controls, a 64-bit upgrade and colorblind options. Japanese and Chinese voice acting and text localization are new, while more than 50 minor factions become playable.

That is a broader update than a simple bundle, but it is not a sequel and it does not rewrite the basic SHOGUN 2 structure. The appeal is still the tension between turn-based clan management and real-time battles where terrain, morale and timing can wreck a confident plan in minutes.

Existing owners should separate the two versions

The original SHOGUN 2 is not being replaced inside existing libraries. Creative Assembly says current Steam owners keep the original game and receive any legacy DLC they do not already own at no additional cost. The original version remains playable.

The Complete Edition was sold separately. The launch FAQ described a loyalty offer ending November 12, 2026. Do not assume that launch offer remains available during the withdrawal process.

Storefront contents also differ. The launch FAQ said a Steam purchase included both the new Complete Edition and the original SHOGUN 2 with its associated DLC, excluding the Blood Pack. It listed the Complete Edition alone for Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG. The Blood Pack is excluded because of age-rating requirements.

The mod split is the real compatibility warning

The Complete Edition uses integrated Mod.io support. Creative Assembly explicitly says mods made for the original SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with the new version. Original mods remain available for the original game, so longtime players should keep that installation if a favorite overhaul or campaign is essential.

That creates a practical choice. Returning players with a carefully curated Steam Workshop setup should treat the new edition as a parallel installation, rather than a replacement for their original modded game. The October 15 statement does not promise a timetable for fixes.

What to check before starting a campaign

  • Pick the correct executable. The original and Complete Edition serve different mod libraries.
  • Confirm the storefront package. The launch FAQ listed the legacy game with Steam purchases; recheck the actual offer following the withdrawal announcement.
  • Do not assume the Blood Pack is included. Creative Assembly says it is excluded.
  • Back up local saves and mod lists. A new edition is a poor time to discover that an old campaign depended on a forgotten mod.
