Forza Motorsport 5 is a single-player and multiplayer racing simulation game.

Set across a variety of real-world and fictional racing circuits, the game places the player behind the wheel of more than 190 cars representing multiple manufacturers and eras of motorsport. Its structure follows a traditional progression system, where players participate in championships and standalone races to earn credits, unlock vehicles, and rise through career tiers. Events are organized by car class and discipline, covering everything from production road vehicles to professional open-wheel machines.

Gameplay emphasizes realistic physics and precision driving. Each vehicle features accurately modeled handling, weight distribution, and performance characteristics that change according to tire wear, braking technique, and surface conditions. The circuits (fourteen at launch) include laser-scanned recreations of international tracks such as Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone, and the Nürburgring GP circuit. Races can be adjusted for assists such as traction control, braking aids, and rewind functionality, allowing both simulation-focused and casual players to tailor difficulty.

A central feature of Forza Motorsport 5 is the Drivatar system, a learning AI that records player behavior and mirrors it across other users’ games. Instead of traditional computer-controlled opponents, races populate with AI drivers that imitate the racing style, aggressiveness, and tendencies of real players on Xbox Live. This system enables asynchronous competition, even when friends are offline. Online play includes matchmaking through Smart Match, leaderboards, and custom lobbies hosted on dedicated servers for improved stability.

The game’s presentation is built around a new rendering engine designed for high-fidelity visuals, displaying races at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second. Surfaces and lighting use physically based materials, enhancing reflections and detail across car bodies and track environments. The Autovista feature returns as ForzaVista, allowing players to explore vehicles in interactive showroom mode, examining interiors and learning historical information about each model.

Progression in Forza Motorsport 5 revolves around earning credits and driver levels through race performance. Credits can be spent on purchasing cars or applying performance upgrades, while cosmetic liveries can be customized or downloaded from the in-game community. Additional content such as car packs and new circuits was released after launch, available as optional paid downloads.
