Xbox announced XP on October 8, 2026, a division bringing film and television, merchandise, live experiences and partnerships under one leader. Kayleen Walters is moving from Mojang to become its president. The announcement also brings a separate leadership change for Minecraft: Maria Angelidou-Smith is due to start as CEO of Mojang and Minecraft on October 19.
For players, the useful question is how a favorite game's world reaches beyond the time spent playing it. A broadcast, a piece of merchandise and a film can each become someone's first encounter with a franchise. Xbox's new structure gives those different encounters a shared home inside the company.
The four jobs inside XP
In Xbox's October 8 introduction, chief strategy officer Matthew Ball describes four areas:
- Xbox Pictures: film, television and other linear storytelling.
- Xbox Products: merchandise that lets fans express their connection to a franchise.
- Xbox Places: live events, broadcasts, attractions and destinations.
- Xbox Partnerships: work with creators, brands and communities, including sponsorships.
Ball says XP brings together capabilities already spread across Xbox teams, and that games remain central to its franchises. That makes coordination the immediate change: the same fictional world can appear in several formats, with a division responsible for developing those relationships.
Mojang gets a new leader on October 19
The accompanying leadership announcement connects Walters' appointment to her experience expanding entertainment properties. Xbox identifies her as an executive producer of A Minecraft Movie and a producer of its sequel, following 13 years at Lucasfilm.
Angelidou-Smith's background is in products and communities. Xbox cites her work on Facebook Groups and other Meta products, her later product and technology leadership at Personio, and her role as Reddit's chief product officer. Her October 19 start date is still ahead as this article is published.
Those are two distinct responsibilities: Walters will lead the wider XP division, while Angelidou-Smith will lead Mojang and Minecraft. Keeping the roles clear helps readers follow future announcements without treating every Minecraft development as an XP project.
Why Minecraft is the useful example
Minecraft already gives this structure a recognizable example. Microsoft's March 2025 Minecraft Live recap discussed game updates alongside a film clip and an in-game event. Our read is that XP's success will become easier to judge through specific projects: which game worlds it chooses, who makes the adaptations and experiences, and how well they preserve what fans recognize. The organizational announcement establishes responsibility; each finished work will have to earn its audience.
