Battleborn
Current Play Availability
Battleborn's official servers closed on January 31, 2021. The Xbox One game requires those services and is no longer playable, including its campaign. The description below explains the game's original design and modes.
About the Game
Battleborn combined a first-person hero shooter with cooperative missions and objective-based team competition. Its campaign brought an alliance of unusual heroes together against the Varelsi, using a colorful, comic-style presentation to give its science-fiction conflict a distinctive character.
Heroes & Team Roles
The original roster offered heroes with different abilities, making team composition an important part of combat. Choosing a character meant considering how that hero could work alongside the rest of the group. Individual performance mattered, but a balanced team had more ways to respond to enemies, protect an objective, or support a push across the map.
Progression Within Each Match
Heroes began each match at the first level and gained experience as the action unfolded. Leveling up introduced a choice of upgrades, letting players shape their character's strengths for the encounter rather than relying on one fixed build. Separate progression and challenges originally unlocked additional heroes, giving repeated sessions another layer of goals.
Campaign & Competitive Objectives
Campaign missions mixed assaults, defense encounters, and escort tasks. Competitive matches put two teams against each other through goals that went beyond defeating opposing heroes. Capture focused on controlling locations; Meltdown rewarded teams for guiding their minions toward an incinerator; and Incursion revolved around attacking enemy sentries with the help of allied minions.
Resources & Map Control
Gathered currency could fund structures, upgrades, and equipment bonuses. Camps around a map offered another reason to move away from the main confrontation, with stronger minions helping a team's advance. Those systems tied combat to territory and resources, making the original experience a contest over how a team used the whole battlefield.
