Disney's Herbie: Rescue Rally

Nintendo DS

Disney's Herbie: Rescue Rally

Disney’s Herbie: Rescue Rally puts the famous Volkswagen Beetle at the center of an original Nintendo DS racing story. Louise Noble discovers that the dusty car she borrows for a day at Swift Valley Speedway is no ordinary set of wheels. Her rival, inventor Edward Vile, plans to take the Noble family’s animal sanctuary and convert the property into a sewage dump. Louise enters the Cross State Grand Prix with Herbie, facing Vile’s armored imitation, Herman, in a bid to win the prize and save the sanctuary.

Arcade Racing with Herbie’s Personality

Racing is built around quick steering, power slides, turbo starts, shortcuts, jumps, and item use rather than simulation handling. Holding the R Button while steering begins a power slide; exit it correctly and Herbie receives a speed boost. Five core power-ups create offensive or evasive opportunities, including thrown tires, wheelie boosts, oil slicks, and a temporary autopilot that lets Herbie race backward at high speed. Multiplayer adds its own disruptive items, including reversed steering and magnetized cars.

The Happy Herbie Meter gives each race a second objective. Collect enough numbered Herbie markers and the game points toward a special target. Reaching it triggers a Herbie Moment: a set-piece move such as climbing a wall, running a loop, or vaulting an obstacle. Touch Screen prompts help complete the maneuver for a stronger boost. One unlockable power-up also uses the Nintendo DS microphone, extending a wheelie according to the sound it detects.

Story, Tournaments, and Quick Races

Story mode advances through a series of races while introducing the contest with Vile and Herman. The full game offers 16 races across four environments—Race Track, Desert, Mountain, and City—with routes that include ramps, hills, hazards, and alternate paths. Event rules change the objective: Normal Race asks four cars to finish first, Boost Race measures distance within a time limit, Against the Clock adds seconds through pickups, and Head-to-Head is a direct two-car contest.

Progress in Story mode unlocks courses for Quick Race, Tournament, and Multiplayer, along with bonus horns, power-ups, and additional vehicles. Tournament mode awards points against three computer-controlled rivals and opens the next series after a silver or gold result. Quick Race provides direct access to routes already earned. Up to three profiles can be stored, and Story progress saves automatically at the end of races.

Local Wireless Competition

Multiplayer supports two to four people through Nintendo DS Wireless Multi-Card Play. Every participant needs a Nintendo DS-family system that accepts Nintendo DS Game Cards and a separate copy of the game; this is local wireless play, not an internet or Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection mode. The host selects settings and an unlocked track, and racers choose from seven cars. The Touch Screen and system microphone are used by specific prompts and power-ups, so a working touch display and microphone are part of the intended experience.

A Compact Herbie Racing Package

Rescue Rally focuses on approachable arcade speed, light story scenes, recognizable Herbie stunts, and steady unlocks instead of vehicle tuning or online competition. The single-player modes work without any external service, while Multi-Card Play keeps its versus option usable wherever compatible local hardware and game cards are available. The North American cartridge is rated E for Everyone with No Descriptors.
