Final Fantasy VII
About the Game
The seventh main installment of the Final Fantasy series takes place in a post-industrial fantasy and science-fiction world where advanced technology, magic, monsters, bioengineered creatures, and ancient powers coexist. The narrative begins in the city of Midgar, which is controlled by the Shinra Electric Power Company, a powerful corporation responsible for much of the world’s technology and political influence.
Story & Setting
As the story unfolds, Shinra is revealed to be only one part of a greater threat, and Cloud must confront both the secrets of his past and a powerful enemy whose actions could endanger the entire world. New Limit Breaks are unlocked as characters use existing ones or defeat enemies, while the strongest Limit Breaks often require optional side quests or special items. Computer-generated full-motion video sequences are used throughout the game for major story moments and cinematic transitions.
Gameplay & Core Systems
Like its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII is a Japanese-style role-playing game featuring turn-based battles with a real-time element through the Active Time Battle system. Enemies are usually encountered randomly while exploring hostile areas, and combat is fought by selecting commands such as attacks, magic, items, and special abilities as each character’s time gauge fills. players recruits multiple characters over the course of the story, usually forming an active party of three. Each character has distinct weapons, statistics, and Limit Breaks, while most magical and command abilities can be reassigned through the Materia system. Magic spells, summons, commands, support effects, and certain stat changes are tied to Materia orbs that can be equipped in weapons and armor.
Standout Features
- Materia: This allows players to change a character’s abilities by rearranging Materia rather than relying entirely on fixed character classes.
- Materia can be bought in stores, found during exploration, earned through events, or received as rewards.
- Limit Breaks: Each character also has a set of unique special techniques called Limit Breaks.
- Limit: As characters take damage, their Limit gauge fills; once full, it can be spent to perform a powerful attack, healing ability, or other special action.
- World map navigation and battle scenes are rendered in 3D.
- The game also includes a large number of mini-games, many of them optional, as well as numerous secrets and side activities.
- These include arcade-style diversions, optional characters, hidden Materia, powerful optional enemies, chocobo breeding and racing, and other rewards for exploration.
- Materia: In addition to experience points, characters earn ability points after battle, gradually strengthening equipped Materia and unlocking improved or expanded abilities.
Modes & Ways to Play
While Mako fuels modern civilization, it is also the lifeblood of the planet, and Shinra’s continued exploitation of it is gradually damaging the natural world. The game uses 3D character models over pre-rendered backgrounds for towns, dungeons, and other field areas, with fixed camera angles varying from scene to scene. As the story progresses, players gains access to different vehicles and modes of transportation, allowing the party to reach previously inaccessible areas of the world.
