Halo: Combat Evolved
About the Game
Humanity is in the midst of a long war against the Covenant, a theocratic alliance of alien species that has been destroying human colonies throughout space. players take the role of the Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced super-soldier stationed aboard the UNSC Pillar of Autumn. After fleeing a Covenant attack, the ship makes a blind slipspace jump to avoid revealing the location of Earth and emerges near Halo, a vast artificial ringworld of mysterious origin. With the Covenant close behind, the Master Chief must fight to survive, protect the ship’s artificial intelligence, Cortana, and uncover the secrets of Halo.
Story & Setting
As the campaign progresses, the conflict expands beyond the war between humanity and the Covenant, introducing another hostile force connected to Halo’s true purpose.
Gameplay & Core Systems
Halo: Combat Evolved is a science-fiction first-person shooter with prominent vehicular combat elements. The single-player campaign is divided into large, objective-based missions that combine corridor combat, open outdoor areas, defensive encounters, and vehicle sequences. Missions often follow a defined route, but many battles take place across wide terrain, allowing for multiple approaches to combat encounters. players are often accompanied by friendly UNSC Marines, who fight alongside the Master Chief, take cover, man turrets, and ride in vehicles. Enemy behavior is also more coordinated than in many earlier shooters: Covenant units use cover, flank players, set ambushes, and react to the status of stronger leader units.
Standout Features
- The game limits players to carrying two weapons at a time, encouraging frequent weapon swaps and tactical choices.
- Human weapons, such as the assault rifle, pistol, shotgun, sniper rifle, and rocket launcher, generally resemble conventional firearms and fire physical ammunition.
- Covenant weapons have a more alien design, often using plasma or energy-based attacks.
- Weapons are commonly scavenged from fallen enemies, though some areas also provide supply caches.
- In addition to firearms, players can use melee attacks and carry grenades separately from the two-weapon limit.
- Once the shield is depleted, further damage reduces players’ health, which can only be restored with health packs.
- Vehicles are one of the game’s defining features.
- Covenant: players can drive or ride in a variety of human and Covenant vehicles in both single-player and multiplayer modes.
