Ken Griffey Jr’s Slugfest combines the decisions of a baseball game with the longer work of building and managing a team. Its licensed major-league clubs and players reflect the original release, while selectable stadiums, commentary and player animations frame each contest as a period baseball broadcast. You can start with an exhibition or commit to a season in which lineup choices and results carry forward.
At the plate, timing and placement influence the direction of a hit. Arcade batting offers a visible target, while Classic batting removes that assistance. On the mound, different pitches create a contest between speed, movement and deception. Holding a pitch for more power also increases the pitcher’s fatigue, so repeatedly throwing at maximum effort comes with a cost. Fielding and baserunning can be handled with assistance or given more direct player control.
Season play lets you choose a full schedule, a shorter season or a late-season pennant chase. Drafting, trades, free agents and optional injuries change how you assemble and maintain a roster. Between games, you can revise the batting order and starting players; during a game, substitutions and bullpen changes let you respond to a difficult matchup. Create a Player adds another way to shape the team by distributing points among pitching, hitting and fielding abilities.
The multiplayer limits depend on the mode. Exhibition and World Series games support one or two players, while up to four people can manage teams in a season or compete in Home Run Derby. The latter shifts the focus from managing a complete game to finding the timing for repeated long hits.
A Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak enables the optional super-high-resolution display mode; it is not required for the standard game. Slugfest gives you useful choices about how much assistance to use, making it suitable both for a quick batting-and-pitching contest and for players who want to follow their roster through a longer campaign.
