A Rescue Mission for the M&M's
Mr. Runch, a rejected peanut determined to become an M&M, is loose in the galaxy and trapping the candy characters inside crystals. M&M's Break' Em turns their rescue into a bouncing puzzle adventure, with Red, Yellow, Blue, Green and Orange among the heroes trying to stop him.
Bounce, Change Color and Clear the Stage
Your character keeps bouncing around an enclosed stage, and the task is to make contact with targets of the matching color. Candy coaters change your character's color so you can free the remaining pieces. You steer the bouncing character through the layout to line up each useful contact.
Hazardous faces and skulls can cost a life on contact. As more of them occupy a stage, threading through the safe spaces becomes part of the puzzle alongside choosing a useful color and reaching the next target.
Targets, Time Limits and New Areas
Some blocks need repeated matching-color hits before they disappear. Each level gives you a time limit to remove the targets and find the exit, bringing timing into the task as well as color matching.
Story progress opens further locations and includes boss encounters. Keys provide access to hidden stages marked on the map. That gives the adventure a route through its levels as well as individual layouts to solve.
The playable characters differ in speed, power and boost. Special blocks can supply bonuses such as extra points, temporary invulnerability and score multipliers, adding another reason to consider the obstacles you hit while working toward the exit.
Touch Controls and Colorful Puzzle Screens
On Nintendo DS, the lower touch screen directs the M&M while the action appears above. Keeping track of both screens is part of using this control scheme. The original Family Friendly Gaming DS review noted that this split between steering and watching could be difficult at times.
Bright color schemes distinguish the characters, targets and stages. The graphics use small candy characters, with music behind the action and a recurring bounce sound. Color changes are a practical gameplay signal as well as part of the M&M theme.
Nintendo DS Multi-Card Play
This is the Nintendo DS Game Card version. Its North American package identifies wireless multi-card play for one or two players and states that connected games require one Game Card per player. For a two-player session, each participant needs a DS system and a copy of the game.
