Madden NFL 2001 combines an NFL football simulation with several ways to build a contest around it. You can play an exhibition, guide a team through a season or take responsibility for a franchise over successive years. The Nintendo 64 version uses the teams and player data of this original release, with match commentary and replay presentation giving each drive the rhythm of a sports broadcast.
The core game asks you to choose a formation and play, then control the action after the snap. Passing depends on reading receivers and coverage; running gives you moves for finding space or surviving contact. Defensive calls, player positioning and audibles let you respond to the offense. Adjustable difficulty, penalties and controller configurations help you choose how much of the simulation to manage directly.
Franchise mode adds contract decisions, trades, free agents and a rookie draft to the on-field schedule. You can compare player progression, revise a depth chart and prepare a team for the next season. Custom League and Tournament offer other structures for a shared competition, while Practice and Situation modes let you work on a play or set up a particular game problem.
The Two-Minute Drill turns offense into a short scoring challenge, allowing a group to compare performances rather than requiring everyone to play a full game. Madden Cards provide a separate reward system: completing challenges earns tokens for virtual cards that can unlock content or change aspects of play.
The play editor lets you design offensive and defensive assignments and test the results. User profiles keep custom plays, settings and records together. Local matches support up to four simultaneous players, and a Controller Pak is required to retain season, franchise and profile data. This entry offers a choice between a quick head-to-head game and the more patient work of shaping a team and playbook.
