Madden NFL 2002 is a single-player and multiplayer American football simulation game based on the 2001–2002 NFL season. It features all 31 active franchises of the time along with the inclusion of the expansion Houston Texans, who were playable a year before their official debut in the league.
The core gameplay continues the long-running formula of realistic, play-by-play football. Players can take direct control of athletes on the field, selecting formations, calling audibles, and executing passes, runs, and defensive strategies in real time. Controls can be set to Easy Play for simplified actions or Normal Play for full access to advanced commands, allowing players to adjust the game’s complexity to their comfort level. Expanded animations, new player faces, and motion-captured sequences were introduced to give on-field action greater variety and authenticity.
Several modes of play are available. Exhibition allows for single matchups, while Season mode covers a full NFL schedule with trades, drafts, and roster management. Franchise mode extends this by offering long-term control of a team across multiple seasons, including scouting, free agency, and financial decision-making. A notable addition is the Two Minute Drill, a fast-paced mode where players must score as many points as possible within a strict time limit, emphasizing quick play-calling and execution.
Customization options include the ability to create individual players or design an entire team, which can then be taken into any game mode. Trades and roster adjustments are supported throughout a season, giving players the ability to shape their ideal lineup. Authentic NFL stadiums are rendered in 3D, and team rosters were updated to match the 2001 season.
The game also incorporates presentation elements modeled after televised football broadcasts. Commentary, score overlays, and instant replays contribute to the broadcast-style atmosphere, while expanded statistics and tracking systems allow players to monitor performance across games and seasons.
