MLB 2005 continues Sony's series of baseball games, this time featuring improved graphics, a more comprehensive franchise mode, and more precise controls relative to its immediate predecessor, MLB 2004.

The PlayStation 2 version of the game also adds online play to the series for the first time, as players can square off against one another in exhibition games or tournaments via the Network Adaptor. Also new to the PS2 version is the player editor's support of the EyeToy camera, allowing players to import their own faces onto custom players.

The game also retains its familiar set of modes: career, exhibition, All-Star Game, season, playoffs, Spring Training, and Home Run Derby.
