About the Game
MVP Baseball 2004 gives you control of baseball at two different scales: the decisions made during an at-bat and the work of building an organization over time. You can take the field with a major-league team, explore its AA and AAA farm clubs or concentrate on a batting or pitching challenge. The GameCube edition brings those pieces together around a revised hitting system and more direct control over plays in the field and on the bases.
The result is a baseball game in which managing a club and playing a game are connected choices. You can focus on the next pitch, work through a season with a roster you have shaped, or take a manager’s perspective when you want to concentrate on the team rather than every swing and throw.
Batting, Pitching & Big Plays
The EA SPORTS Pure Swing System makes hitting more than a single repeated action. Swing choice and execution affect contact, giving an at-bat its own decisions as you try to deal with the opposing pitcher. It sits alongside the pitching side of the game, so a full matchup lets you take responsibility for both trying to create offense and preventing it.
Big Play Control uses the right stick for actions that can decide a close play. In the field, it gives you control of dives and sliding catches. On the bases, you can choose slides, including a hook slide or an attempt to break up a double play, and you can challenge a catcher at home plate. These actions make fielding and baserunning part of the direct-control experience rather than leaving every dramatic moment to an automatic animation.
Pitcher warm-ups and mound visits add management decisions during a game. You can prepare a reliever before making the change, while pitch-history information helps you examine what has happened in an at-bat. The game also includes events such as wild pitches and passed balls, giving you more situations to react to as an inning develops.
Dynasty & The Farm System
Dynasty Mode extends over as many as 120 seasons and includes the major-league club plus its AA and AAA teams. You can play, simulate or manage at different levels of the organization, then work with developing talent and the movement of players through the farm system. The minor-league teams are part of your baseball project, rather than existing only as background to the MLB roster.
Player happiness and team chemistry give roster building another consideration beyond assembling a list of stars. You are managing how the organization functions as well as how it performs in the next game. That wider perspective gives the long campaign a continuing purpose, with prospects and the parent club connected through the decisions you make.
Challenges, Rewards & Other Ways to Play
Pitcher Showdown and Home Run Showdown provide shorter tests of pitching and batting. Manager Mode offers another perspective on a matchup, and the scenario tools let you set up a particular baseball situation. These options provide alternatives to starting or continuing a long Dynasty whenever you want a more focused session.
The rewards system gives play another set of goals through MVP points and unlockable baseball content. Legendary players, retro uniforms and classic stadiums connect the game to earlier baseball eras, while the user profile and trophy room record your accomplishments. You can work on those goals alongside the major-league teams and farm-system play.
Presentation & GameCube Play
Major- and minor-league teams, classic ballparks and historical uniforms give the game several different baseball settings. Player animations and the on-field presentation keep a single matchup grounded in the sport, while the historical selections offer another way to shape the look of the game.
The North American GameCube package supports two simultaneous local players and uses a GameCube Memory Card for saved progress. Have two controllers for a local matchup. Its local modes let you build an organization, practice baseball skills or share a matchup on the same console.
