Quake II
Quake II on Nintendo 64 places a lone space marine behind enemy lines on the Strogg homeworld. Your assignment is to disrupt a cybernetic force threatening Earth, pushing through hostile installations while completing mission objectives. This N64 adaptation uses a largely different set of levels from the PC release, giving its campaign a layout and pacing tailored to the console.
Combat mixes movement, weapon choice, and the search for supplies. The basic blaster does not need ammunition, but the larger arsenal relies on pickups scattered through the levels. A shotgun suits a close encounter; heavier automatic weapons and explosives give you other options when enemies block a passage. Keeping enough ammunition for the next room matters, especially when an apparently quiet area turns into a fight.
Health, armor, and other supplies reward attention to the environment. Your ocular implant presents mission objectives, while finding an exit leads to a performance report covering kills, secrets, and completion time. Weapons, ammunition, and armor carry into the next map, making the condition in which you finish a level relevant to the one that follows. Three skill settings let you choose the campaign's difficulty.
Local split-screen multiplayer supports two to four players across eight arenas. Deathmatch is a free-for-all, FragTeams turns combat into a team contest, and FlagWars asks teams to retrieve the opposing flag. DeathTag changes the objective again: hold the flag for as long as possible while the other players try to take it from you. Additional controllers are needed for additional players.
Campaign progress can be saved to a Nintendo 64 Controller Pak. The game also provides passwords after completed maps, allowing you to restore progress without a Pak. Rumble Pak and Expansion Pak support are optional. The mechanical enemies, industrial surroundings, and emphasis on momentum give both the campaign and arena battles a forceful science-fiction atmosphere.
