Star Fox 64 sends Fox McCloud and his wingmates across the Lylat system to confront Andross. The campaign combines fast-moving flight stages with arenas that let you turn and pursue enemies freely. Radio calls from Peppy, Slippy, and Falco make the squadron feel present throughout the mission, offering guidance, asking for help, and reacting to the battle around you.
Flying the Arwing means balancing attack and evasion. You can fire lasers, lock onto targets, use Smart Bombs, and maneuver around incoming fire and obstacles. Pickups replenish shields or improve the laser, and stronger weapons can carry into the next stage when you keep the ship intact. In the forward-moving sections, the challenge is reading what approaches and adjusting your position quickly; All-Range battles instead ask you to track opponents around an open arena.
The route to Venom changes according to what happens during a mission. Completing particular objectives or discovering a different outcome can open another destination, so progression is more involved than simply comparing a final kill count. The map shows routes of different difficulty, and revisiting the campaign reveals new encounters and ways to reach the last battle.
Helping the squadron matters as well. A wingmate who takes too much damage leaves the battlefield for repairs and can miss the next stage. Responding to a distress call therefore protects more than a background character: it helps keep the team available as the campaign continues. Hit totals and saved rankings provide another reason to replay familiar stages and improve a run.
Training offers a place to learn the controls before starting the adventure. Local VS play supports two to four players and includes Point Match, Battle Royal, and Time Trial, each placing a different emphasis on scoring or survival. Each participant needs a controller. The mixture of branching missions, squadron chatter, and replayable scoring gives the game both a complete space adventure and a demanding arcade-style challenge.
