Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters turns the Turtles' adventures into a series of one-on-one bouts. This Super Nintendo version has its own fighting systems and roster, bringing Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo into an arena with opponents such as Aska, Wingnut, Armaggon, and Cyber-Shredder. Each character has different special attacks, so choosing a fighter changes how you approach distance, defense, and the openings between an opponent's moves.
The controls separate normal and fierce punches and kicks. You can jump, crouch, guard, and move into close range for character-specific throws or holds. Ordinary attacks can be blocked without damage, while special attacks can still chip away at a defender's life. Landing repeated hits builds the ultimate-attack gauge in modes that use it; a full gauge unlocks a powerful character-specific attack, but the meter drains if you stop connecting. Story Battle omits that ultimate-attack system, giving its fights a different rhythm.
Story Battle follows a Turtle through the competition to uncover who kidnapped April and Splinter. Tournament mode opens up the broader roster and frames the contest around Channel 6's prize competition. Both use rounds decided by a knockout or the fighters' remaining life when time expires, making it useful to learn when to pressure an opponent and when to protect a lead.
For local competition, VS. Battle lets two players choose their fighters and stage, including mirror matches between the same character. Handicap settings can balance opponents of different experience, while adjustable difficulty, round time, and game speed change the challenge. Watch mode stages computer-controlled matches. Colorful arenas and exaggerated martial-arts moves keep the comic-book personality present throughout the fighting.
