About the Game
Bill Elliott's NASCAR Fast Tracks brings stock-car racing to Game Boy from a dashboard view. Choose an Oldsmobile Cutlass, Ford Thunderbird or Chevrolet Lumina, then race on the banked ovals of Daytona and Atlanta or the road courses of Sears Point and Watkins Glen. The field includes Bill Elliott among fifteen opposing drivers. The circuit type matters to the approach: long oval turns reward a stable setup and controlled passing, while the road courses ask you to adapt to a succession of corners.
Before the race, you can change the car's engine, transmission, gear ratio, tire stagger and spoiler angle. A qualifying engine favors short bursts of power, while the race engine is built for sustained running. Automatic transmission handles shifting for you; manual transmission gives you control over the gears but makes engine speed another responsibility. The other settings trade acceleration, stability and drag against one another, so tuning is connected to the selected circuit and the way you drive it.
Practice gives you a place to try techniques such as drafting and passing before entering a race. You can also choose whether to qualify: the timed lap determines your starting position, making a clean run useful before the main event has even begun. Three skill levels change the consequences of mistakes. Novice prevents spinouts, Rookie introduces them, and Pro makes the opponents race at full pace. During the race, the speedometer, tachometer, lap and position indicators keep the cockpit view tied to the car's condition and place in the field.
Racing involves managing fuel and damage as well as overtaking. Warning lights tell you when the car needs attention, and a pit stop can replenish fuel, replace tires, repair damage or adjust the setup. You steer into the pit lane and choose what the crew will work on, then return to the circuit when the stop is finished. Taking more service takes more time away from the race, so a useful adjustment or repair has to be balanced against the positions you may lose.
Single Race lets you select a circuit and race distance, while Championship Season runs each of the four tracks twice in a preset order at the Pro level. Points and the post-race statistics track that longer attempt. Season progress uses a registration password issued after a completed race; entering it restores the season state and lets you continue with the next event. You keep the same chosen car through the season, but can readjust its setup, making the championship a continuing test of both driving and preparation.
Two-player mode puts both drivers into the same race with the computer field. It requires two Game Boy systems, two Fast Tracks cartridges and a compatible Game Link cable. Player One chooses the race setup, after which each player drives on their own system; the season password also records both competitors' championship progress. Solo play uses one system and copy. The monochrome dashboard includes a rear-view mirror and condition flags, giving the race a cockpit-based presentation while the pit screen handles the detailed service choices.
