Retro games can survive for decades when they are stored well, but heat, moisture, sunlight, dirt, pressure, and careless handling can age a collection much faster than normal use.

Keep games away from extreme heat

Avoid attics, hot garages, vehicles, and other spaces with large temperature swings. Heat can warp plastics, weaken adhesives, stress optical-disc layers, and accelerate aging in cardboard packaging.

Control moisture

High humidity encourages corrosion, mold, paper damage, and label deterioration. A climate-controlled room is usually safer than a basement or shed. If a space has a history of dampness, do not trust a cardboard storage box alone to protect valuable games.

Protect games from sunlight

Direct sunlight can fade box art, labels, manuals, cases, and console plastics. Displaying a collection is fine, but try to avoid strong direct UV exposure for long periods.

Store discs in cases

Loose discs get scratched far more easily. Use a proper case or protective sleeve and avoid stacking bare discs on top of each other.

Do not crush cardboard boxes

NES, SNES, Game Boy, N64 and other cardboard game boxes are easily creased. Store them upright or in protective cases without forcing too many boxes into one container.

Remove batteries from stored accessories

If a controller or accessory uses replaceable batteries and will be stored for a long time, remove them. Battery leakage can destroy contacts and circuit boards.

Keep dust under control

Dust itself is not usually catastrophic, but heavy buildup traps grime and can enter cartridge slots, optical drives, vents, and controller openings. Clean storage reduces the amount of maintenance needed later.

Document valuable collections

For higher-value collections, keep photos and a basic inventory. It helps with organization, insurance records, selling, and tracking exactly what is in storage.
