Burnout puts arcade racing on public roads where civilian traffic is as important as the rival cars. Its six courses move through urban streets and open highways inspired by American and European settings, with compact cars, sports cars, and pickups that handle differently without using licensed makes. Winning requires more than following the racing line: every blind rise, junction, and lane change can turn a fast run into a spectacular collision.
The defining system is the Burn Meter. Driving into oncoming traffic, squeezing past other vehicles, and carrying controlled slides through corners builds the gauge. Fill it and the car surges forward with a sustained speed boost; crash before the meter is ready and that progress disappears. This creates a constant risk-and-reward rhythm. Safe driving protects a lead, while deliberate near misses and late braking create the speed needed to catch the pack.
Championship play links events into a broader progression, while individual races make it easy to return to a favorite route or vehicle. The traffic patterns give repeated runs an unpredictable edge, and the game's forceful camera work and crash presentation make speed feel dangerous even when the controls remain immediate and accessible. The result is a racer built around momentum, nerves, and learning when to gamble.
On Nintendo GameCube, one player can tackle the main racing content and two players can compete locally in split-screen versus play. The saved North American release data also supports progressive-scan and widescreen display modes with Dolby Surround audio. There is no online mode to depend on: its competitive play is local, making this edition a self-contained early entry in Criterion's crash-focused racing series.
