Build Below, Conquer Above
Dungeons III puts you in command of the Absolute Evil’s expanding underground empire. With the dark-elf priestess Thalya leading your forces on the surface, every mission links two styles of strategy: design and operate a working dungeon below ground, then send an army into the Overworld to seize Islands of Evilness and dismantle the forces of good. The campaign spans 20 missions and is framed by a deliberately irreverent narrator, giving the management and combat systems a playful fantasy tone without reducing the amount of planning they demand.
Shape a Functional Dungeon
Little Snots excavate tunnels, mine gold and prepare room space, while you decide how the lair should function. Gold funds construction, research and recruitment, but creatures also expect wages, food, rest and faction-specific comforts. Treasuries shorten travel from gold veins; Gobbler Farms feed Horde and Demon units; Workshops produce toolboxes for traps, doors and work units; and specialized rooms unlock training, research, prisons, resurrection and stronger defenses. Room placement matters because short routes improve efficiency and walls influence room production. A careless layout can leave workers walking too far or key facilities exposed when heroes breach the dungeon.
Recruit, Train and Defend
Your roster draws from the Horde, Demons and Undead, with different hiring rooms, needs and battlefield roles. Orcs and other Horde creatures provide sturdy frontline power, Demons depend on mana-based infrastructure, and Undead facilities let you raise or restore units in ways the living factions cannot. Creatures gain experience and levels, while research expands the dungeon with new rooms, traps, doors, units and upgrades. Guard Rooms and trap corridors help contain invading heroes before they reach the Dungeonheart—the central objective whose destruction ends your rule.
Take the Fight to the Overworld
Dungeon management is only half of the game. You can gather a force, bring it to the surface and control it in real-time-strategy battles. Capturing Islands of Evilness provides the resource needed to advance your power, while enemy heroes and rival Dungeon Lords contest the same territory. This back-and-forth creates a distinct rhythm: build an economy and defensive network underground, then decide when your army is ready to leave that safety and push across the shared Overworld.
Campaign, Skirmish and Multiplayer
The single-player menu includes the story campaign and Skirmish mode. Skirmish uses randomly generated maps and adjustable parameters for a more open-ended session. A co-op setting allows two players to share a game, while competitive multiplayer supports up to four Dungeon Lords, each with a private dungeon connected to the same Overworld. In competitive matches, players fight to capture and hold Islands of Evilness and reach the required Evilness level first.
PlayStation 4 and Edition Notes
This listing is for the standard North American PlayStation 4 disc release, not the separately listed Complete Collection. The current PlayStation Store record lists one-player offline play, online play for up to four players, optional online features, DUALSHOCK 4 vibration and Remote Play. PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer, and continued online availability depends on the platform and publisher services. On PlayStation 5, Sony notes that the PS4 system software may need to be updated and that some PS4 features can be absent.
