Mortal Kombat II for SNES

Mortal Kombat II expands the tournament into Outworld, where Shao Kahn's fighters stand between Earthrealm's champions and freedom. The Super Nintendo conversion was developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim. Its 12 selectable fighters include returning combatants such as Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, and Reptile alongside Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao, Jax, Baraka, and Shang Tsung. Each character has a distinct set of attacks, special moves, and finishing techniques.

Faster, Broader Fighting

Bouts retain the series' direct one-on-one structure while adding more special moves and defensive possibilities. Players can use sweeps, uppercuts, throws, projectiles, teleports, and character-specific techniques to control space and punish mistakes. Victory opens the opportunity for a finishing move, including Fatalities as well as the less severe Friendships and Babalities. Certain arenas also feature stage-specific finishes, giving the backgrounds a mechanical role instead of serving only as scenery.

Single-Player Tournament and Versus

In the solo tournament, one player climbs a ladder of increasingly difficult opponents before confronting Outworld's bosses. A second player can join for local head-to-head competition, and direct two-player mode makes it easy to select fighters and settle a match without progressing through the ladder. Play is entirely local and does not require an online service.

This SNES port preserves the sequel's expanded roster, red blood effects, and full range of signature finishers, making it notably closer in tone to the arcade release than the first Mortal Kombat on SNES. It rewards players who enjoy memorizing inputs, learning matchups, and discovering character-specific techniques over repeated bouts.
