Mortal Kombat for SNES

Mortal Kombat brings the original martial-arts tournament to the Super Nintendo in a home conversion developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim. Seven selectable fighters—Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Kano, Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion—enter Shang Tsung's competition, where the ladder ultimately leads through Goro to the sorcerer himself. Digitized character sprites and distinctive arenas give the game a look that stood apart from other console fighters of its era.

Tournament Fighting

Each fighter combines shared punches, kicks, sweeps, uppercuts, throws, and defensive movement with unique special techniques. Projectiles, teleports, slides, and other character-specific moves create different approaches to spacing and punishment. The one-player tournament introduces progressively harder opponents, mirror matches, and endurance rounds that require defeating more than one combatant on a single life bar. Test Your Might breaks up the ladder with timing-based strength challenges.

Local Challenger Play

A second player can join for local one-on-one matches, including the ability to choose the same fighter and adjust a handicap for uneven experience levels. Play is fully offline and uses standard SNES controllers.

This version has an important platform-specific difference: it replaces the arcade game's red blood with grey sweat and alters several finishing moves. It should not be mistaken for an uncensored arcade conversion. The underlying appeal remains the same—learning each fighter's commands, anticipating an opponent, and advancing through a tightly structured tournament—but buyers seeking a particular presentation should understand the SNES changes. Every character rewards a different balance of close pressure, projectile use, and defensive patience.
