A woodland food raid becomes a suburban adventure
Over the Hedge gives RJ, Verne, Hammy and Stella a neighborhood full of food to chase and trouble to escape. The hedge separates their woodland home from a human world that treats a kitchen cupboard as a treasure chest and an ordinary garden as an obstacle course. RJ sees opportunity in those stockpiles, while Gladys Sharpe and the exterminator Dwayne see animals they want removed. That conflict turns gathering supplies into a series of raids, fights and puzzles, with the film’s characters doing the work under your control.
The GameCube game combines the familiar movie setup with adventures beyond it. Its action follows the animals into suburban spaces where their small size changes the meaning of everyday objects: a sports implement can become a weapon, and a security device can stop a food run. The story gives those objects a purpose. You are helping the woodland group reclaim its neighborhood and bring back supplies while dealing with the people determined to keep it out.
Work through the neighborhood’s defenses
The campaign has more than thirty levels built around puzzle solving, enemy encounters and heists. Moving toward a goal can involve getting past a trap, dealing with an opponent or working out how to reach an item. Lasers and other defenses interrupt the collection work, so the route matters alongside the prize. These missions put the characters’ appetite inside an action game, giving each raid a purpose as you work through the neighborhood’s obstacles.
Human belongings also supply the animals’ tools. Golf clubs and hockey sticks are among the everyday objects used in combat. Their presence carries the suburban joke into what you do, putting familiar household and leisure items to work during the raids. Snacks and power-up items support the adventure through health and energy, connecting the things you collect with the characters’ ability to keep going.
Play alone or bring a partner into the raid
The playable group includes Hammy the squirrel, Stella the skunk, RJ the raccoon and Verne the turtle. Single-player play lets you switch characters, while a second player can join the action locally. The co-op option puts two people inside the same adventure, sharing the food-gathering missions and the trouble along the way. It is a practical choice when you want the film’s group dynamic to become something you play together, with each person taking control of an animal.
On GameCube, one or two players can play offline. The campaign’s local co-op is part of the console game itself, with a second controller providing the second player’s input. The same adventure can support a solo session or an evening with a second player beside you, both taking part in the woodland group’s food raids.
Use the GameCube controls to change your approach
The A button handles jumping and double jumping, while B provides a close-range attack. Y gives you a stronger attack, and X works with the Control Stick for aiming a projectile. Holding R lets your character creep, and Z switches between the two characters during solo play. That selection gives you movement, close combat, a ranged option and a quieter approach within the same set of controls.
Those actions serve different problems during a raid. A distant target calls for aiming rather than moving straight into melee range, while motion-sensor traps give creeping a specific use. The controls help make the neighborhood’s defenses part of the action: choosing how to approach an obstacle is as relevant as recognizing which item you came to collect.
Take a break with the side activities
The game also includes mini-games that change the pace from the main adventure. Remote-control racing and golf-cart demolition put vehicles at the center of the action, while a target-shooting activity uses ranged attacks. These diversions sit alongside the campaign’s puzzles and food raids. Together, they give the suburban setting several jobs: it supplies the animals’ objective, the hazards they face, the improvised equipment they use and the playground for their side competitions.
