Race a Namco cast toward the finish
Pac-Man Fever turns a gathering of Namco characters into a contest of board movement, short challenges and ticket collecting. The competitors arrive for the Battle of the Namco Stars, but the ghosts steal the trophy and retreat into a VIP screening room. Earning entry to that room becomes the larger goal: compete on the boards, collect redemption tickets and buy back the mini-game collection.
The six playable characters bring together several Namco series. Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man compete alongside Tekken's Heihachi and Tiger, Soul Calibur's Astaroth and Ridge Racer's Reiko. A match fields four contestants, with the remaining places filled automatically when fewer than four human players join. Your chosen player name tracks your accumulated tickets, purchased games and trophies across sessions.
Mini-game results decide your movement
Fever mode offers Medieval, Space and Tropical boards, each with Short, Normal and Long versions. The objective is to reach the finish ahead of the other contestants. Before movement begins, everyone plays a mini-game; your placing determines how far you can advance, with the winner receiving the greatest distance. Some challenges pair contestants into teams, giving teammates the same finishing position and movement reward.
Staging squares add placement requirements to the race. The Cherry stage needs third place or better, the Orange stage demands second or better, and the Banana stage requires an outright first-place result; a tie does not qualify there. Landing on an occupied square advances you to the next empty one. Board position, mini-game performance and the squares ahead all contribute to the outcome.
Spend tokens and work the board
Tokens fund actions during a Fever match. Token squares add to your balance, while a Ghost square takes half of it. A Revenge square lets you take half of a selected opponent's tokens. At a Store square, you can buy forward movement, push another contestant backward or purchase a multiplier for the distance earned in the next round. Stores also offer raffle tickets and token gambling.
Fruit raffles can award redemption tickets to anyone holding the matching ticket type, even when somebody else lands on the raffle square. The contestant who triggers it receives an extra entry. Spring squares move you forward, Return squares send you back, and Surprise squares spin a wheel that can alter movement or tokens. A Token Game square gives you fifteen seconds to catch falling currency while avoiding a monkey's anvils; being hit forfeits that attempt's winnings.
Different challenges test different skills
Each mini-game presents its objective and controls before play. The selection changes the kind of input you need, from matching prompts to aiming, collecting and steering:
- Bell Tower Climb and Raise the Flag: Respond with the controller button shown on screen.
- Space Junk: Charge a shot by holding the A button, then release it to fire at the target.
- Cannon Tac Toe: Position an aiming cursor and fire the cannon at your chosen location.
- Knightmares: Pursue the roaming knights, catch them and deposit them in your well.
- Tropical Tag: Watch for the crab that moves around the play area and pinches contestants.
The sports selection includes Homerun Castle and 10-Pin Jungle. Driving challenges combine racing toward the finish with collecting fruit, steering around obstacles and avoiding other contestants. During Fever mode, rankings and scores appear after each challenge, connecting its result to the next board move.
Build a collection for direct play
After a Fever match, the Redemption Center lets you spend earned tickets on individual mini-games. Prices vary, so you can buy an affordable challenge or retain tickets for a more expensive one. Purchased games become available through Single Game mode, while six Backlot games can be selected without first buying them.
Pentathlon strings together five randomly selected challenges and is free to enter. Decathlon expands that format to ten, requires a redemption ticket earned in Fever mode and opens after every mini-game has been purchased. Completing the collection also earns the VIP entry needed to recover the stolen trophy.
Playing on GameCube
The GameCube edition supports one to four players in local simultaneous competition, using a controller for each participant. Saving requires a GameCube Memory Card with ten free blocks. Insert it before starting: saved names, trophies, tickets, purchases and high scores are loaded at startup, and the game records progress automatically.
