About the Game

Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie for Nintendo GameCube follows a film expedition into Skull Island’s dangerous interior. As screenwriter Jack Driscoll, you accompany director Carl Denham and actress Ann Darrow into a place inhabited by giant insects and dinosaurs. The adventure also puts you in control of Kong himself. Switching between a vulnerable human and the island’s huge ape changes both the viewpoint and the scale of the action.

Surviving as Jack

Jack’s sections use a first-person view and make available weapons part of the survival challenge. Firearms are useful, but ammunition is limited, and you can carry only one gun at a time. Spears and sharp bones found around the island give you another way to attack, letting you conserve bullets for a threat that is approaching too quickly. The choice is often between spending a powerful resource now and relying on what the environment provides.

Fire and the island’s wildlife create tactical opportunities. A burning spear can clear dry vegetation, while bait can draw a predator toward a position where it is easier to deal with. These encounters ask you to consider the surroundings alongside the creature in front of you. The other expedition members also help: they speak during the journey, use available weapons and fight nearby enemies. You need to watch their safety as well as your own.

A visible health bar does not frame Jack’s view. Injury instead affects the picture and sound, warning you to escape the immediate danger and recover. That presentation keeps your attention on the creature, cover or route ahead. Giant predators, close encounters with insects and moments spent protecting companions give the human sections their repeated sense of being outmatched.

Kong’s Strength & Movement

Taking control of Kong changes the game to a third-person view with brawling and traversal. His fists, grapples and finishing attacks deal with creatures that Jack would struggle to face. Loose objects and enemies can be hurled, making size and reach part of the fighting. The same great strength also applies to destructible structures, including the action that eventually moves to New York.

Kong must also climb and swing through the environment, moving along suitable walls and supports to catch up with threats to Ann. These sequences put agility beside brute force: the challenge can be reaching her quickly rather than standing in one place trading blows. At certain obstacles, Ann can help clear the way while Kong protects her, before they continue through the island.

Replay, Presentation & GameCube Play

After finishing the story, replaying stages introduces scoring. Defeating creatures adds points, while using weapons, taking damage and allowing companions to be hurt can reduce the result. Revisiting a familiar encounter therefore gives you a different goal from merely surviving it: use resources carefully and keep the expedition out of trouble. It provides an additional challenge within the game’s stages.

Film-character likenesses and voice performances accompany the jungle, ruins and large creature battles. The score and sound effects help signal approaching danger, while the changes between Jack and Kong give familiar locations markedly different proportions. This is a one-player GameCube release using a GameCube controller. A memory card is needed to retain progress, and saving is available from the pause menu.
