Resident Evil 4

About the Game

Resident Evil 4 takes place six years after the events of Resident Evil 2 . Kennedy, formerly a rookie police officer in Raccoon City and now a U.S. government agent, is sent to a rural region of Europe to search for Ashley Graham, the kidnapped daughter of the U.S. president. What begins as a rescue mission soon leads Leon into a violent conspiracy involving a mysterious cult, hostile villagers, and old acquaintances whose motives are not immediately clear. Resident Evil 4 marks a major change from the earlier games in Resident Evil games .

Story & Setting

Later enemies and bosses introduce more monstrous forms, keeping the threat unpredictable as the story progresses. Ada’s campaign revisits some familiar locations while adding new scenes, objectives, and equipment.

Gameplay & Core Systems

Instead of fixed camera angles and pre-rendered backgrounds, the game uses a third-person perspective positioned behind Leon, with an over-the-shoulder aiming system for combat. This allows players to manually aim at specific body parts, such as heads, arms, or legs, affecting how enemies react. The controls and camera give the game a faster, more action-oriented feel while still retaining elements of survival horror. Many of the main opponents are Ganados, villagers infected by a mind-controlling parasite. They are more coordinated than traditional zombies, able to communicate, surround Leon, dodge attacks, climb ladders, open doors, throw weapons, and attack in groups.

Standout Features

  • Weapons, ammunition, healing items, and other supplies occupy grid spaces according to their size, allowing players to organize items manually and expand carrying capacity by purchasing larger cases.
  • Leon can collect money and treasure from enemies, containers, and hidden locations.
  • Treasures can often be sold as found or combined with gems to increase their value.
  • Merchant: The traveling Merchant appears throughout the game, allowing players to buy weapons, upgrade firepower, reload speed, capacity, and firing speed, purchase larger attaché cases and treasure maps, and sell unwanted equipment.
  • This economy gives players more control over weapon progression and combat style.
  • Weapons include handguns, shotguns, rifles, magnums, grenades, and special weapons, with limited inventory space encouraging players to choose which tools to carry and upgrade.
  • Stunning an enemy with a well-placed shot can allow Leon to follow up with a kick or suplex, conserving ammunition and creating space.
  • The game also includes context-sensitive actions and quick-time events during certain cutscenes, boss fights, and escape sequences.

Modes & Ways to Play

The Mercenaries mode returns as an arcade-style survival challenge in which players controls unlockable characters and attempts to score points by defeating enemies within a time limit. Depending on the version, additional unlockables include alternate costumes, bonus weapons, extra difficulty settings, and smaller side scenarios such as Assignment: Ada.

Presentation & Atmosphere

Combat combines firearms, melee attacks, environmental hazards, and quick reactions.

Display support includes Progressive Scan (480p) and Widescreen (16 x 9). Audio support includes Dolby Pro Logic II.
