Shin Megami Tensei V [Steelbook Edition]
Shin Megami Tensei V sends a Tokyo high school student into Da’at, a ruined parallel city where angels, demons, and rival ideologies compete to shape a world without its Creator. After joining with the mysterious Aogami, the protagonist becomes the Nahobino—an entity neither human nor demon—and gains the power to cross hostile wastelands, confront mythic beings, and decide what kind of order should follow the apocalypse. This 2021 SteelBook Launch Edition is the original Nintendo Switch release, distinct from the later Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance.
Exploration unfolds across large, layered regions filled with hidden routes, elevated paths, optional encounters, quests, and resources. Leyline Founts provide recovery and access to essential services, while Glory unlocks Miracles that customize the Nahobino’s combat abilities and exploration benefits. Demon Essences let you transfer selected skills or affinities, giving you another way to refine a build before difficult fights. The stark desert ruins, towering landmarks, and unsettling soundtrack give Da’at a severe, otherworldly atmosphere.
Combat uses the series’ Press Turn system. Striking an enemy weakness or landing a critical hit can generate additional actions for the party, but missing, being blocked, or attacking into resistance can cost turns. Enemies can exploit the same rules, so party composition and elemental coverage matter. Magatsuhi skills provide powerful tactical effects when their gauge is ready. Outside battle, demon negotiation can turn opponents into allies; fusion then combines recruited demons into new partners with inherited skills. Building and rebuilding the party is central to progression.
This is a one-player role-playing game with no online multiplayer requirement. Nintendo lists the original release as not supporting Save Data Cloud backup. The North American game card is rated Mature 17+ for Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, and Violence.
