EXPLORE THE GAME

Sonic Gems Collection

Sonic Gems Collection

Three headliners and six portable games

Sonic Gems Collection brings together several different sides of Sonic on GameCube. Its main attractions are Sonic CD, Sonic the Fighters and Sonic R, joined by six Game Gear games: Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic Spinball, Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble, Sonic Drift 2, Tails’ Skypatrol and Tails Adventures. The result mixes platforming, fighting, racing and smaller portable adventures rather than presenting one continuous campaign.

Platforming through time

Sonic CD builds its side-scrolling stages around time travel. Passing a Past or Future sign and maintaining enough speed sends Sonic into another version of the area. Destroying enemy-producing machinery in the past can create a better future, giving exploration a purpose beyond reaching the exit. Special Stages add a timed hunt for UFOs and Time Stones, while Time Attack lets you return to cleared stages to improve your results.

Arena fights and foot races

Sonic the Fighters is a 3D fighting game with a solo Arcade mode and two-player versus matches. Punches, kicks, combinations and defensive barriers give its short arena fights a different rhythm from Sonic’s platform games. Sonic R turns the characters into racers, with a solo Grand Prix, time trials and local races for up to four players. Balloon hunts and tag challenges add alternatives to chasing a finishing time.

The Game Gear library

The portable games add their own kinds of movement and challenge. Sonic 2 and Triple Trouble offer side-scrolling platforming, Sonic Spinball uses pinball-style levels and Sonic Drift 2 focuses on racing. Tails’ Skypatrol keeps Tails airborne, while Tails Adventures combines exploration with useful gadgets. Quick Save and Quick Load, plus persistent save slots, make the smaller games easier to return to between sessions.

An archive that grows as you play

The collection includes built-in manuals for the original games and a Museum of artwork, movies and music. Additional items appear as requirements are met, and unlocking a first music track opens the Audio Player. Hints in the Extras menu provide another reward for progress. These features connect playing the included games to building a larger archive of Sonic material.

Local player counts and saving

Player support depends on the chosen game. Sonic the Fighters has two-player versus battles, Sonic Drift 2 offers two-player split-screen and Sonic R supports two to four local players. The other named adventures are for one player. Connect GameCube controllers for the participants in the selected mode, and use a GameCube Memory Card to retain progress, settings and unlocked material. The collection’s games and archive are played from the GameCube release.
