Star Wars Episode I: Racer
Star Wars Episode I: Racer builds a racing game around the podracing spectacle of The Phantom Menace. Anakin Skywalker and the other pilots compete in machines that pull a small cockpit behind two enormous engines, making narrow turns, rough surfaces, and sudden obstacles feel especially dangerous. Success comes from learning the course and keeping those engines under control at speed.
Tournament play provides the main progression. The Amateur, Semi-Pro, and Galactic circuits lead through increasingly demanding events, with finishing requirements opening the next race. Completing circuits also reveals further challenges, including the Boonta Eve Classic on Tatooine. The route through the competition gives you reasons to return to difficult tracks and improve more than a single finishing position.
Prize money feeds back into the vehicle. Between events you can inspect the podracer, purchase upgrades from Watto, or look for used components in the junkyard. Parts affect how the machine performs, while pit droids help repair its condition between races. That creates a useful choice between spending on a better component and looking after the equipment already fitted to your racer.
On the track, braking, skidding, and choosing a clear line become as important as raw acceleration. The repair control lets you attend to damaged engines while racing, so an impact can force an immediate decision about speed and recovery. Different podracers have their own characteristics, making experimentation with pilots and upgrades part of mastering the competition.
Free Play lets you revisit available tracks with adjustable race settings, while Time Attack puts the emphasis on improving your solo times. Two-player split-screen racing adds a direct local contest, with a second controller required. The optional Expansion Pak enhances the display, and Rumble Pak support adds feedback. The N64 version’s named player files and tournament structure make it easy to approach the game as an ongoing racing career or a shorter session on a favorite course.
