About the Game
X-Men: The Official Game for Nintendo GameCube follows the mutants between the events of X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Iceman return to the trouble surrounding Alkali Lake and face a threat to mutant-kind. Each hero receives missions built around his own abilities, so advancing the story means changing how you play as well as where you go. Storm and Colossus appear in supporting roles, alongside enemies such as Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike and Multiple Man.
Wolverine’s Close-Range Combat
Wolverine handles the adventure’s direct brawling. His missions place groups of enemies and bosses in front of his claws, with quick strikes, stronger blows and combinations used to break through their defenses. Blocking and evading give you ways to survive the next attack, while enemy types call for different responses. His combat rage provides a temporary increase in power, and his healing ability lets you recover when the situation gives you room.
The fighting uses a third-person view, with the camera framing the groups or the individual boss encounter. It emphasizes reading an opponent’s opening and choosing an effective attack. Wolverine’s destructive strength shapes the mission spaces, but completing an objective still matters: simply having the claws does not make every route immediately available.
Nightcrawler & Iceman
Nightcrawler’s sections combine acrobatics with teleportation. You jump gaps, swing from poles and use marked destinations to move through the level, reaching switches and other mission objectives. In combat, teleporting around an enemy creates an opening to attack from a different side. The destination indicator helps identify an available jump, making positioning and the surrounding space part of using his power.
Iceman travels on an ice slide and attacks at a distance with an ice beam and Hailstorm projectiles. His missions move between open areas and narrower courses, where speed, steering and avoiding obstacles are central. Some sequences ask you to reach a goal before time expires; others keep you circling an area to deal with threats. His powers can also interact with mission objects, such as freezing machinery or fighting fires, giving the flight-style action specific tasks beyond shooting.
Powers, Replay & Film Presentation
As the campaign advances, the heroes’ powers can be upgraded. Returning to earlier stages on different difficulty settings gives you another way to tackle their character-specific challenges. Completing the game also opens character costumes, and each hero has a Danger Room course among the unlockable activities. These additions keep replay tied to the three different styles of movement and fighting.
The story is delivered through illustrated sequences with voice performances, including Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Alan Cumming and Shawn Ashmore. The playable characters’ appearances follow the films, while the environments are tailored to their powers: close quarters for Wolverine’s fighting, traversal opportunities for Nightcrawler and routes that make room for Iceman’s ice slide. The result is a succession of superhero missions with three distinct control styles.
This North American GameCube release is a single-player game played with a GameCube controller, with a memory card for retaining progress. The appearances of other X-Men support the story and missions; the three playable heroes are Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Iceman. You move between their stages as the campaign progresses.
