Cuphead already turns a cartoon argument into a boss fight. The Delicious Last Course gives that argument another island, another cast of oversized problems and a new playable character. Before buying it, though, separate two questions: what does the expansion add, and which purchase gives you permission to play it?
Studio MDHR released the expansion in 2022. This is a look at its features and ownership requirements, not a new-release announcement. Its most interesting addition is not simply another destination on a map. Ms. Chalice also gives returning players a different way to approach the original adventure.
Start with the game, then identify the expansion
The original Cuphead is built around run-and-gun action with a strong emphasis on boss encounters. Studio MDHR identifies solo and local cooperative play, alongside weapons, super moves and secrets. The cartoon presentation is part of that specific game: hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor scenery and original jazz recordings.
The Delicious Last Course is additional content for that game. On Steam, the official DLC listing explicitly requires the base Cuphead game on Steam. Buying an add-on is not the same thing as buying the underlying game. The DLC-only purchase will not solve a missing base-game problem.
For a newcomer, that makes the first shopping check straightforward: does the purchase contain Cuphead itself, the expansion, or both? Read the named contents rather than assuming that a larger picture of the characters means a larger software package. A soundtrack bundle also deserves a contents check; music ownership and playable game ownership answer different questions.

The new island provides a fresh reason to fight
Studio MDHR describes the expansion as a quest involving Chef Saltbaker, a magical wondertart and ingredients guarded by formidable opponents. It adds an Inkwell Isle, bosses, weapons and charms. Those are the concrete additions behind the title, rather than a promise that every part of the original game has been replaced.
Our reading is that the ingredient hunt gives the boss-centered structure a suitably absurd excuse. A dessert does not normally require negotiations with a giant, but Cuphead has never looked like a sensible place to arrange catering. The characters and setting provide a reason to anticipate the next encounter before you know its attacks.
The official images also help distinguish the expansion from a simple equipment pack. Mortimer Freeze appears above an enormous orange creature in an icy arena. Glumstone the Giant crowds another scene with birds, platforms and small figures. These are visibly different compositions, not evidence for an exact difficulty ranking or a guaranteed completion time.

Ms. Chalice is more than another face on the island
The developer's Steam description identifies a changed moveset and new abilities for Ms. Chalice. It also makes a useful promise for existing players: once acquired, she can be used in the expansion and the original Cuphead adventure. Her role is therefore broader than being confined to the new destination.
That is the addition worth thinking about if you already own the base game. Another area gives you unfamiliar encounters. A different character gives you a reason to revisit familiar ones. Our interpretation is that those are complementary forms of value: new situations to learn, plus a different way to approach situations you recognize.
Do not turn that into an automatic claim that she makes every fight easier. A changed moveset still needs to suit the player using it. Our recommendation is to read the in-game ability descriptions and compare what you can do before following a strategy written for a different character. Knowing the opponent does not mean every old input is still the answer.

Make the purchase match your existing setup
If you already own Cuphead, first confirm where that copy lives. The Steam add-on's requirement is specifically for the Steam base game. Do not treat a purchase on one storefront as proof that another storefront will recognize the same ownership. Check the platform and exact package before paying.
If you are buying a used physical edition, read what the seller actually includes. Do not assume that every Cuphead box has the same expansion entitlement, or that a separately supplied code is present and unused. Ask for the exact edition and included contents before choosing a used copy.
Find another run-and-gun game at Zypher
Buy your next game from Zypher. For physical alternatives, check Contra for NES or Contra: Shattered Soldier for PlayStation 2. These are separate games, not Cuphead editions or expansion substitutes. Match the platform, condition and listed inclusions to your setup, or sell your old games to Zypher and clear room for another challenge.
