Four heroes at an inn with item inventory in Darkest Dungeon II

For Halloween, Darkest Dungeon II offers a particularly unpleasant road trip: troubled heroes, hostile country and a stagecoach that has somehow become the sensible transport option. Before setting out, choose which campaign structure you actually want to learn.

Confessions and Kingdoms are different ways to play the same game. The useful distinction is between an expedition-led experience and a strategic campaign with a persistent roster. This PC-focused guide explains that choice, the free Kingdoms update and the separate DLC purchase question.

Confessions puts the expedition in focus

The current Steam description frames the core experience around four heroes travelling by stagecoach. Expeditions generate resources that can improve later attempts, while the Altar of Hope provides progression between journeys.

Our recommendation is to start here if you want to concentrate on a particular party's decisions and the journey ahead. Think about what the group can do together, what a route asks of them and what you learned when the attempt ends. The next expedition becomes a chance to apply a more informed plan.

That structure also gives a useful way to discuss a failed attempt. Identify one decision to change rather than declaring the entire game unknowable. Did the party lack an answer to a problem? Did a choice create a cost you had not considered? Those are practical questions to carry into another journey.

Kingdoms gives the map and roster more permanence

Red Hook's January 23, 2025 development notes describe adding elements such as a persistent roster and a larger self-contained campaign. The designers explain Kingdoms as a strategy layer inspired by board games, with a more persistent sense of place and time.

For a player, that changes the kind of question worth asking. Alongside considering the people in your current party, think about the condition of the wider campaign. Where should effort go next? What is worth defending? Which decision helps you keep the larger plan working?

That is an editorial way to approach the structure, rather than a claim that one route or upgrade order always wins. If the attraction is managing an ongoing situation across a map, Kingdoms gives you a clear reason to investigate the alternative campaign.

Switching modes does not mean merging their progress

The current PC listing says progress is tracked separately and that players can switch between active sessions of either mode. Read that as permission to choose the experience you want, rather than assuming every unlock in one campaign becomes an identical starting position in the other.

When following a guide, identify its mode and date first. Advice written before the January 2025 Kingdoms PC release needs that historical context. A valid explanation of an older Confessions system may leave your current campaign question unanswered.

Match the advice to the decision you are actually making. Expedition planning and managing a wider persistent roster have different priorities. You can enjoy both structures without expecting one set of instructions to explain every part of the other.

Kingdoms was a free update, not the name of the paid DLC

Red Hook's January 27, 2025 launch post identifies Kingdoms as a free addition to Darkest Dungeon II on PC and Mac. The same announcement separately introduces the paid Inhuman Bondage DLC, with the Abomination and Catacombs.

That is an important shopping distinction. Two releases arriving together do not make the paid item the admission ticket for the free campaign update. Start by identifying the game and mode you want, then evaluate an expansion's actual content.

The current Steam page lists the three Kingdoms adventures, Hunger of the Beast Clan, Secrets of the Coven and Curse of the Court, as available. This is an established mode being revisited for Halloween, not a claim that all three launched today. Check the exact platform's current update information if you are playing elsewhere.

A gothic RPG for a different kind of Halloween

Red Hook's official game page describes encounters whose stress can drive heroes toward a meltdown or a resolute response. It places the road through locations such as the burning Sprawl and diseased Foetor. That is plenty of Halloween atmosphere before a costume is required.

The images here are archival Darkest Dungeon II press screens: an inn, the Working Fields and a relationship notification. They illustrate the sequel's presentation and Confessions-era systems. They do not show a Kingdoms map, current item balance or gameplay from the first Darkest Dungeon.

Pick Confessions when the expedition is the appeal; investigate Kingdoms when an ongoing strategic campaign and roster are what you want to manage. That is our editorial recommendation about structure. Neither choice promises a comfortable evening for the people in the carriage.
