About the Game
Alex Rider: Stormbreaker follows a teenage recruit drawn into an MI6 investigation after the death of his uncle, Ian. Sayle's plan to provide schools with Stormbreaker computers gives Alex an assignment that moves from military training to infiltration of a guarded mansion. This Game Boy Advance game uses the film's spy setting for a series of action missions, with Alex learning the tools needed to investigate the operation and survive the dangers around it.
The handheld version is built around small, two-dimensional characters seen from an angled overhead view. You move through rooms and outdoor sections, confront guards and look for the route into the next area. Its emphasis is direct movement, fighting and item use within those spaces. Brief mission instructions and text scenes connect the stages, so the story provides a reason for the next objective while most of your time is spent controlling Alex through the environment.
Guards make combat a regular part of the mission flow. Alex can punch and kick at close range, with the challenge coming from positioning him against approaching enemies while moving through the room. Gadgets give you alternatives in some encounters, including a stun weapon and smoke to deal with threats. The mix asks you to judge whether to close the distance, use a tool or continue toward the objective. It combines a spy's equipment with straightforward action rather than making every encounter depend on remaining unseen.
The gadgets also solve specific navigation problems. A yo-yo can act as a grappling tool for crossing gaps, and corrosive cream is used at designated barriers. Detection equipment helps with hazards or enemies, giving the kit a use beyond hitting a guard. New tools become available as the missions progress, so an obstacle can call for the item introduced for that stage. Learning where a gadget applies is part of finding the route, alongside the basic movement and close-range fighting.
Keycards and doors create another layer of progression within the levels. You need to search the accessible spaces, find the correct access item and return to the route it opens. The North American package highlights army training, guards inside Sayle's mansion and an escape involving a jellyfish, placing those tasks within distinct parts of Alex's assignment. Changes between training, infiltration and escape vary the immediate objective, while the missions continue to build on the same movement, combat and gadget controls.
The presentation uses compact sprites and illustrated story screens, with short text exchanges and music accompanying the action. This is the separate Game Boy Advance design by Razorback Developments, so its angled view and room-based missions define how it plays. It is a single-player cartridge game. The package identifies Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Micro and Nintendo DS compatibility; for Nintendo DS play, a system with a Game Boy Advance cartridge slot is needed. The combination of accessible hand-to-hand fighting, mission items and a gradually expanding gadget kit carries Alex's investigation through this handheld adaptation.
