In Archer Maclean's Mercury, your job is to guide a blob of mercury, or several blobs, along various mazes, by tilting the game world. Released for the PSP, this puzzle release challenges you with precise environmental control as you negotiate delicate liquid physics across perilous test courses. Instead of directly moving an avatar, you adjust the angles of the stages beneath your metallic puddle, learning how to balance acceleration, deceleration, and the unpredictable nature of flowing liquid.

Color Markers and Puzzle Mechanics

Progression through each puzzle requires clever problem-solving alongside steady handling. En route, you are required to run over color markers, which will change the color of your blob to the color required to win the level. Managing the shade of your substance becomes an active routing requirement rather than just a cosmetic touch. Some areas of the game will require you to split your mercury into two, roll each blob over two different colored switches, and then combine the two blobs to form a third, different color. Coordinating multiple parts of your payload across distinct switches ensures every maneuver must be planned with precision.

Hazards, Obstacles, and Escalating Trials

Each level has different elements to it, some of which will help you and some of which will hinder you. Navigating the courses means dealing with mechanical contraptions and dangerous architectural traps. There are conveyor belts, moving platforms, launch pads, and jagged corners that when hit, will cause your blob to split into two, even three. Striking an aggressive angle can accidentally scatter your droplet into fragments, turning a straightforward sprint into a high-stakes salvage operation.

There are 83 different mazes, each one progressively harder than the last. Carrying an ESRB rating of Everyone, the challenge demands steady nerves and strategic routing from start to finish. Known by its Japanese title [Hg] Hydrium, this experience turns pure momentum and color management into a true mental trial.
