G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra adapts the legendary military franchise into an intense arcade-style shooter that follows an elite team of soldiers taking the fight directly to the malicious forces of Cobra. Though drawing inspiration from the 2009 cinematic release, the game deploys an entirely original narrative arc where players must thwart the global domination schemes orchestrated by the diabolical Cobra Commander.
Employed from a behind-the-back perspective mirroring classic arcade shooters like Neo Contra, the action demands constant movement and tactical target prioritization. Players wade through relentless waves of adversaries, utilizing an expansive arsenal that features standard machine guns alongside heavy rocket launchers. When enemy fire becomes overwhelming, operatives can activate the Delta 6 Accelerator Suit, a specialized piece of military hardware that grants complete invulnerability for a brief window of time.
Mission objectives require pushing forward through heavy resistance, clashing against enemy infantry soldiers, armored tanks, and fast-moving jet fighters. Each stage builds toward challenging end-of-level boss encounters that test both weapon management and defensive positioning. Beyond foot combat, operatives can commandeer various enemy and friendly vehicles scattered across the terrain to turn the tide of battle.
Progression is tied directly to expanding your roster of playable characters. Out of twelve total Joes available in the game, players begin with an initial squad and unlock additional operatives upon completing missions. Each character brings distinct capabilities defined by their combat rank: Commandos specialize in devastating close-quarters combat, Heavy Weapons experts dominate long-range engagements, and standard Soldiers provide a versatile hybrid of both tactics.
The experience fully supports cooperative play via an offline two-player drop-in and drop-out system, allowing a friend to jump into missions at any moment. When playing a single-player session without a human partner, artificial intelligence automatically controls the second on-screen soldier to maintain constant tactical pressure throughout every combat zone.
