About the Game

Metal Gear Solid is a stealth action game and a sequel to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake . After his confrontation with Big Boss, special operative Solid Snake has retired to a secluded life in Alaska . He is brought back into service when members of FOXHOUND, a rogue special forces unit, seize a nuclear weapons disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island. The terrorists threaten to launch a nuclear strike unless the U.S. government turns over the remains of Big Boss, their former commander.

Story & Setting

Sent alone into the facility, Snake must rescue hostages, determine whether the terrorists are capable of launching a nuclear weapon, and stop their plans before the crisis escalates. Avoiding unnecessary combat is often safer than direct confrontation, since ammunition and healing items are limited and alerts can quickly draw reinforcements. Its presentation is highly cinematic, using voice acting, directed cutscenes, camera changes, music, and dramatic pacing to advance the story.

Gameplay & Core Systems

The gameplay builds on the stealth-focused structure of the earlier Metal Gear games . Instead, players must avoid detection by hiding, crawling, pressing against walls, distracting guards, using shadows and cover, and waiting for safe openings. Guards react to sounds, footprints, suspicious movement, and other signs of intrusion. If Snake is spotted, the area enters an alert state, forcing players to escape, hide, or fight until the search is called off. Many items are used as much for infiltration and problem-solving as for combat.

Standout Features

  • FOXHOUND: As the mission unfolds, he also uncovers secrets connected to FOXHOUND, the Metal Gear project, and his own origins.
  • Progress often depends on acquiring new access cards, equipment, or information, then returning to earlier areas with new ways to bypass security or solve obstacles.
  • Although stealth is central, the game also includes action-oriented set pieces and boss battles.
  • VR Training: The game also includes "VR Training" missions, separate challenge stages that teach and test movement, stealth, weapon use, and other mechanics outside the main story.
  • Certain choices and performance conditions can affect the ending and unlock bonuses for later playthroughs.
  • The Soliton radar helps track nearby guards and their fields of vision, though it becomes unavailable during alerts or in certain areas, requiring players to rely more directly on observation.
  • These encounters often require players to learn an enemy’s patterns, exploit a weakness, or use specific equipment rather than relying only on direct firepower.
  • Some puzzles and encounters also experiment with players’ expectations, using the interface, controller, or information outside ordinary combat to create unusual solutions.

Modes & Ways to Play

Player support includes 1 Player.

Presentation & Atmosphere

Puzzle-like situations, environmental hazards, backtracking, and scripted events also shape progress through the facility. The game uses fully polygonal 3D characters and environments, usually viewed from an overhead or angled camera perspective, with the ability to switch to first-person view for looking or aiming in certain situations. Codec radio conversations allow Snake to receive mission advice, contact allies, save the game, and learn more about the characters, setting, and political background of the mission.
